Macna

Wow,
We got back last night and my head still hurts from the information intense weekend we just spent...

All day Friday ,Sat we sat listening to speakers talk about various attributes of the hobby.
Daniel Knop, James Fatheree , Dana Riddle, Eric Borneman,Ray Torres, Ron Shimek to name a few..
A reception Friday night with Dr. Bruce Carlson from the Georgia Aquarium , originally Waikiki, talked about the the Georgia aquarium ,construction with particular emphasis on the open oceans exhibit and the collecting of the whale sharks..
Then Sat night a sit down banquet with the speaker being Dr Gerald Allen, talking about his discoveries and adventure in the marine hobby. Talked about some of the new disvories that we will be seeing in the hobby at some point. Showed some very funny Collecting video, at a depth of 300-450 ft. Spoke about the use of re-breathers how that has opened up the hobby to a new
frontier .
We had daily raffles particularly at the Euro-reef / Vortech/ Icecap/Salifert booths ,,.. 4 or 5 people walked off with new Euro-Reef skimmers ,Ice cap ballasts, Salifert Testing kits, Vortech powerheads.. plus they provided Free Cappucinos Sat morning and 40 Large pizzas at lunch time for all the attendees.
And piece de resistance was a complete 200 gal Zero-Edge Aquarium system. If you do not know what a zero-edge aquarium is google it or check the sponsors list on reef central ...

The big raffle Sunday had a ton of stuff donated by all the vendors. The people from Central pet donated a complete with livestock 178 gal.aquarium with cherry stand and canopy... very sweet system...

If you are thinking about going sometime it is being held in Atlanta next year at the Georgia Aquarium. The registration fee until the end of Septeber is 89.00 dollars , then Oct 1 it doubles , the rooms are 119.00 a night....
The Sat night Banquet will be held in the special ballroom of the Georgia aquarium and hosted by Wolfgang Puck..
It has views to the open oceans exhibits and the beluga whales so they will be watching you have a great time...

I picked this massive frag up from Dr. Mac (Himself!) while I was there. Man the price was right.

John (Zanclus) picked up one of the big table acros from the Zero-edge tank.

MACNA was great. I must have gotten $200 in free samples and products. Not to mention we had open bar for both Sat and Friday night.

Can't wait for Macna Dos Equis. Atlanta here we come!

WOW!!! Thank you for all of those wonderful pictures!

Why don't we have something like this in Syracuse? I'm thinking someone or some group needs to start planning an event like this. I'm sure there is enough interest locally and others would travel in for it. What do you say? Whose up for it?

Things like MACNA are one of the reasons behind a more formal organization such as the re-organizing of URS.
It would be necessary to have a lot of volunteers.money, time energy, collaboration, etc. to pull this off. For the size of MACNA, I do not think it could be done in our area.

I think your under estimating yourself and the people in the area. Also it doesn't have to start out as large as MACNA, start small and grow over time. Add a little more each year and if the quality in the show is there the crowds will grow with the size of the show. I think there are enough people in NYS to make it a doable idea.

Besides that if you get the word out enough people from neighboring states will drive here for the show just as some New Yorkers drove to the past shows.

the formation of the URSNY is a step in the right direction for conditioning upstate NY for an event such as MACNA, Sherry. It also gives us a good idea of how many people are seriously interested in such events.
The evening at the Seneca Park Zoo with Anthony Calfo and Sanjay Joshi (earlier this year) was a great start and hopefully we can keep the ball rolling....
but it takes people that are willing to give of their time and energy etc.
These things just don't "happen" on their own when somebody thinks of the idea

Marc is pretty good with his camera. Check out the pix he took at MACNA in this thread:

So I think I counted 12 people from the URS area at MACNA. I was kinda suprised not more made the short trip.

Its really the mecca for reefkeeping. Well worth the price. Even a seasoned vet like me learned a thing or two. I was most amazed by Dr Bruce Carlson and Gerald Allen. Both of those men are giants in this hobby. The usual suspects were good although I found Eric Borneman's lecture to be...well....Pretty much blah. Dr Shimek had a very interesting lecture on the feeding habits of gorgonians as related to flow.

I would really urge all reefkeepers to attend MACNA XX in Atlanta. If your deep into this hobby you really owe it to yourself to go.
