Catalina Goby and Blue Spotted Jawfish

Anyone keep these fish? I would like to learn more about keeping it in a 7 gallon nano aquarium with a 5.5 gallon fuge.

I believe the biggest problem with the catalina goby is their love for colder water. My reef runs at 81 degrees which is too hot for them. The draw back to the blue spot is that they love to dig.

will they die in a water temp of 80 degrees? will they ever get used to it? if i lower my temp to 76 - 78 will it effect my other inverts and corals badly?

and as for the blue spotted jawfish... are these fish suitable for a nano? and i know they are expensive and maybe even rare... but do any of you keep them? and know anywhere i can buy them for a good price... maybe even trade a frag for them?

thanx so much and sorry for the annoying amount of questions

I would skip the Catalinas. They do best at a temp of 74 and below. Their life span is just a matter of months at a higher temp than this. Check your lfs for a deal on a BSJ. I personally would think a 7 gallon is way to small for them, I would think 30 would be minimum for them. They do get to 4 inches or so. Scott Michael recommends a minimum being a 20 gallon. I would stick to small fish like Clown Gobies, maybe even a Watchman Goby. Plus a BSJ will wreck havoc of your live rock unless it is extremely well balanced cause they will dig and do have a tendency for rock to land on them. Hope this helps.

I would not keep a bluespot in a 7 gallon. 10 gallon might work if hes the only fish in there but the mini bow is just a bit small. Mine are very territorial and have had fights even in a 46 - they like to build and also like a deep substrate at least 4 inches would be my suggestion - I have 6" in his tank.

The catalina is a cool water fish - tropical temperatures will shorten it's lifespan drastically - the only adapting it will do is dying - if you want to keep one the tank should be 72 deg farenheit or less IMO. There are many great fishes you could keep in a 7 minibow but I would limit yourself to one small fish - might be able to get away with two gobies if they are small.
