someone killed my new CBS (coral banded shrimp), suspects are a emerald crab or 6 line... crab was found eating it but 6 line was way to interested when he was alive. I missed the actual murder.

six line or a four line.. although I haven't see four lines in a while.. it's like a green six line.. but with four lines.. er, yeah.
anyways... I love my six line.. always on the go, going in and out of caves in the LR... like with any fish the occational one will find interest in the stuff you don't want it to.. maybe get a small one and let it grow into the tank a bit.. my six line has doubled in size over the last year and never bothered any one of my shrimp (blood, coral banded, and peppermint). |

We just got a 12 line (which I think is the same as the 4 line) wrasse and it's gorgeous. I highly recommend one if you can find it, but it is difficult because I think they are only found in Hawaii? We got ours off the divers den at liveaquaria.com. If he bothers our 2 cleaner shrimps, I'll be posting about it for sure!

You should be fine with with fairies or flashers. I had a large radiant wrasse which is very similar to the yellow coris take out all my shrimp except the coral banded.

I got a Sixline and a Seagrass Wrasse (green coris) in my 90 gallon. They get a lot with a lot of hermits, snails, a large cleaner shrimp and a coral banded shrimp. I like the Seagrass Wrasse a lot. It is very active and is always swimming around. I feed about every two days and make sure that the wrasse get a large portion of the food. I think keeping them happy at feeding time will improve your chances to not lose crabs and shrimp.

Any of the fairy or flasher wrasses, six lines and similar should be fine. The yellow "coris" and any real coris may be fine when small, but as they grow, shrimps will be on the menu.

yeah, I've seen wrasses and other diadems completely change their behavior after feeding them live food. They got VERY aggressive! Needless to say, I stick with flakes and frozen stuff.

I have a six line that doesn't bother my cleaner one bit. They are great because they eat parasites and worms. I have had them attack peps though.

I think Hawk fish are a much bigger threat to shrimps than most reef friendly wrasses.. unless the wrasses are quite big..

I've had both of my peppermints disappear recently, and I've got an ornate wrasse approaching 4 inches, a 4-inch vevlet fairy wrasse, and a 3-inch solar fairy wrasse, though I've never seen any of them go after the shrimp. I have a cleaner shrimp which is still OK. I do credit the christmas wrasse with keeping the display tank clean of flatworms, since they were a recurring problem until I got the christmas wrasse (the other wrasses were present with flatworms, never seemed to touch them). I also have a smaller canary wrasse (same genus, Halichoeres) which I added to the sump and now the sump is essentially free of flatworms too. I'm thinking of a 3rd Halichoeres for the refugium to keep the flatworms in check there too, but have been reluctant since the pod population might be decimated. Getting back to the original question I think the "reef-safe" wrasse are great fish, and you probably couldn't go really wrong with any of them. Certainly they don't bother corals, though from what I've been reading here may be a threat to some shrimp when they get larger. That's a trade-off I can live with though, everyone has a taste for peppermint now and then.

So - seems like lots of people here have multiple wrasses in one tank.. could I get another one for my 85gal? I have a lot of LR for them to hide in.. what would be ok with a six-line?

Definitely a "in your face fish" --- that seems to always come out and join everyone in living room.
Mellow, easy going fish. Gets along with everyone. Never has shown tendency to bother any inverts. Gets along fine with his 6 line partner. He knows he is pretty and likes to show it. Hawaiian Flame Wrasse Latin Name: Cirrhilabrus jordani Common Name: Hawaiian Flame Wrasse (male )
