billsreef.com - wide variety of macroalgae's, and vascular grasses.
harvested from the New England coastline and Bill's growout tanks
ipsf.com - wide variety of macroalgaes from the Pacific, raised in their facility.
inlandaquatics.com - a source for chaeto and other macroalgaes, grown in their own tanks.

pls feel free to add other vendors I have missed, these are just the three I deal with on a regular basis.
Hi,
There is a new vendor of live MacroAlgaes, live Copepods, live Rotifers, live Plankton :

Their Website : http://www.marinelife.com

They ship in Europe and Switzerland in 48 hours with UPS.

For the record, most macro algae cannot survive long transport.
A few species can, most cannot.
So expect mush unless it's cool and cool packs are added.

Use the fastest shipping method and cool packs always.
Or come get the weeds yourself:-)

Hi,
Thank you very much. I am happy to have found a macro-algae forum. Before i meet this forum, i was wondering if i was the only one to be interested with algaes !

Have you made a list of the best macro-algaes wich grow well in a refugium or reef tank ?

No, but it would be a good subject for a thread!

For sandbeds in brightly lit tanks, Udotea, Penicillius, and sand-associated Halimeda species are good tank alga, IME. They are resistant to most grazers, except urchins.

For tanks running a little richer in nutrients and are brightly lit, I like Sargassum in the display. Doesn't spread across rockwork, but can grow quite large up into the water column anchored from its holdfast. Resistant to grazers.

Chaetomorpha is an algae often recommended over here for refugia. I've found that at very low nutrient levels, other algae outcompete it. At higher nutrient levels it can be overwhelmed by filamentous algae growing on it. But still, for many tanks, an effective algae for a vegetative filter. Many caulerpa are used for refugia. Not a big fan of caulerpa, some are invasive in the wild if they escape your tank. Some like C. racemosa var peltata, are very difficult to control in reef tanks.

Thats a hyper-brief list of a few common algae available over here. Julian Sprung's little book on algae is a good resource on common algae and pest algae you are likely to encounter in the hobby.

WOuldn't it be easier to just ask around and get some stuff from local reefers? LIke we all need to empty out/prune/cull our refugiums once in a while right? Get some that way, then you don't have to search all over to find it, unless you want a certain sp. that no one has around, ...

Click on the UK flag in upper right corner of the web page after you go to the shipping page. That brings up the English version of the page.

As an update to this thread:

Florida Pets address has changed to their name dot com.
Gulf Coast has been out of buisness for many months now and is not currently shipping plants, nor do they seem to have plans to reopen.
Marine Depot and Live Aquaria also have macroalgaes.

The best source for miscellaneous macro's may be each other here on RC, or to bug your LFSs to death!

To freshen those links Sarah mentioned:
Florida Pets
Florida Pets Plants Page Shoal, Manatee, and Turtle seagrass available here, along with macroalgae. These are wild-collected grasses and algae.
Bill's Reef He's selling the seagrass as part of a refugia kit now? I *think* Bill's grasses and algae are tank raised.
Inland Aquatics. Their Fauna Kit has some interesting-sounding macros and is appealingly priced.
eTroicals (Dr F&S)
And last, Marine Depot Plant page. They are calling some reds (Rhodophytes) "red" Caulerpas, and have a picture of a C. racemosa-like algae with the title "maiden's hair" algae.

Florida pets are very helpful and amazeing imo. I live in pa ordered 40 snails and a starfish int he middle of winter got here iwth no problem. Also about the divein in the keys. There was alot of talk about this about 6 months ago in the scuba diveing forum. I believe you need to contact the fish and game comission and then you have to get a permit. Also you cannot collect from designated areas and reefs that are protected. By other then that you are fine. Also being 16 doesnt meen anything i have had my diveing certification since i was 14 and im now 16.

I'll be going to Florida later this year in mid June.
There are roughly 50 species we sample.

This trip is available to the public and I'll have some details as I figure out more specific dates, the marine portion will be 3 days and it's cheap(like poor student cheap).

Regards,
Tom Barr

Frag outpost/marineflora.com

Sam, (bluenassarius on RC) now has his business up and running. i bought several macros from him as a private seller on RC and was stunned at the superb communication, excellent packang and shipping, and prompt service overall. he even threw in a pair of strombus and stomatella snails (which i can't get at any of my LFSs) for free. the quantity and quality exceeded my expectations. check him out at either www.fragoutpost.com and look up marineflora under the frag providers tab or go to http://www.marineflora.com/index.html.

I collect this stuff (codium) on Atlantic beaches on the east end of Long Island NY. It grows well and is free and plentyfull. Only snails eat it.

I hope I have misunderstood "marine-life" , because they claim to sell Ventricaria ventricosa however it doesn't look like the right algae on their picture (here is some info and a correct picture) so I hope they just used the wrong name (not the wrong picture) because it (Ventricaria ventricosa) is a devil in an aquarium.

I don't see Florida Aqua Farms listed yet. I've not ordered from them but they have several species of gracilaria in addition to some caulerpa and ulva.

Update:

SeaCrop : also offering up a few species of macroalgae and, so far, one species of Halophila seagrass which they are calling green oar algae.

Happy gardening!
