Breeding as a business? Please help!
I am writing a paper on aquaculture industry and would like my paper to focus on the ornamental fish industry. What I am trying to determine is the viability of the business, or is in profitable for entrepreneurs, what are some good readings that specifically talk about the aquaculture business, and costs of running, starting etc.
All the help would be appreciated. Thank you p.s. First hand experience would be great |

books--frank hoffs-breeding conditioning of clownfish, is a great starter book for aquaculture, its his diary of starting one of the first marine aquaculture facilites, clearly it was not profitable.
I am only aware of 2 commerical Marine ornamental aquaculture ventures which to this day remain profitable. Too my knowledge the big guys are not there yet.(also they are privately held firms so they don't have to release sales figures)Again in marine ornamentals, not marine food fishes

Most of the ornamental outfits, heck the food ones too, tend to be pretty tight lipped about a lot of that stuff. At the same time, with a little leg work it is not hard to go through supply catalogs and such and start figuring out a lot. There are a couple of good periodicals out there that often have good articles, such as Aquaculture Magazine and Hatchery International. Some the best info could probably be found through Sea Grant, for marine ornamentals I would suggest looking up Florida Sea Grant.
BTW there is a standing joke among professional aquaculturists..... How do you make a million dollars in aquaculture? Start with 2 million
