I just stopped here for part of a cruise. I really hated it. There were torrential downpours every 15 minutes, and I was begged for money at least 50 times in the hour I got off the boat. The people are extremely pour. I knew nothing about the island before going there so I was more interested in reef activities, but I was told that the rain forest was very nice.

Maybe they were targeting cruise ship people, but I never had anyone ask me for money in the two weeks I was there.
Go in the winter, not the summer. We experienced light mists in the forest, but never any heavy rains. I do think they have a rainy season, but don't know when it is. That is something that would be worth checking into before traveling there.

I also got back from a week stay there at the end of june. I was asked for money once over a period of 9 days. I'm sure that most of the beggars do flock towards the cruise ships. I hate that you didn't have a good experience there. We were rained on once and we stayed in the rain forest.

Gorgeous pic. ^
I know where that is. Portsmouth. We dove right off the coast. Unbelievable! If you were the one who drove through town, did you have fun.

fun is one word for it. I don't remember Portsmouth being that bad, but the southern coast wasn't so great as far as the driving was. I got used to it and enjoyed it except for the potholes. We stayed at Beau Rive which is on the Atlantic Coast and loved it.

When we were there, Portmouth had construction going on. We to flip back the side mirrors and squeeze through the streets. Sometimes reversing to let people through.
