Smile Thread Police

Yes, I feel I need to play thread police here. We're starting with a thread subject and dragging it all over the place. There are several examples recently.

I saw this happening a while back but when it was just a few of us on the Chico Reef Club on RC I didn't care. But with more and more people using this forum, I am requesting to tidy things up.

1) Please do not hi-jack threads - even if you started the thread. If you're going to post, please feel free but check the heading to ensure your post cooresponds.

2) Some information being posted should be better sent via email or PM. Please respect what is public, maybe what shouldn't be, and what others maybe simply don't care to read.

3) Not everyone has as much time here and I've heard a few comments (and not the first time) about RC having a lot of off-topic comments to get to the actual thread information. Lets clean up our threads... I'm not saying not have fun or the occasional tag here and there is not allowed. Just a request to tidy things up a bit. Believe me ,you'll appreaciate it when you are trying to find some past discussions.

I can't wait to see what you all respond to this one.

Thanks in Advance!!!

1) I think when a point has been made or a satisfactory answer has been given to a question it's ok to move to a new topic. An example would be the topic I posted regarding Chico Pet Works; it perhaps wasn't appropriate, but we still had a fun conversation about it.

2) Yeah.

3) I *strongly* feel that friendly banter is needed in these threads. It's what gives us personality, and unites our club. It's fun to go around at our meetings and say our online names and have people laugh and/or groan. I don't think that sterility is of any benefit to this club. On the other hand, I concur that there are serious questions that require serious answers. I just think it's a sign of a healthy and growing club when members can discuss things OUTSIDE of reefing.

Think about friendships; what do they start with? Most often a common bond (reefing). From there, healthy friendships extend to other areas (i.e. video game playing in one of our other threads.) I think people are disinclined to frequent forums where personalities are neglected. We need personas to go with our names.

Maybe this is just the psychologist in me. The best part about this club has been meeting new people, shooting the breeze, and enjoying life and reefing. I hope that I'm not mis-representing the club, and I by no means want to be the "club badboy" or anything like that.

I agree with both you guys...... Staying on topic is important but I feel once the topic dies then the typical back and forth banter should be allowed. It doesn't sound like you're wanting to completely stop it just moderate it a bit, which is cool...

I look forward to making it to the December meeting.

You've both hit it head on. Threads were more or less just becoming sloppy. i.e looking on the Good November Meeting thread to see who is the king of Nano's or finding tips on Xenia in JWrecking Joel's Tank (I too was guilty on that one.)

It is simple enough to post a new thread - especially if a topic/thread does die - I feel it should die; it can always be brought up again and then a link provided back to the previous one.

If you wish to post an off-topic thread, please indicate by preceeding the subject with OT: example:
OT: Solar Power for your aquarium.

As for the freindly banter... by all means - yes, we do need some personality here and it is fun after some time of reading threads posted by people imagining who they might be and then to finaly meeting them in person.

I figured I'd post some pretty stern guidelines and then let people speed (i.e limit 55 so everyone goes 65 - catch my drift). And anyway, whose to say I'm the real cop here or could do anything about it. I've seen the real moderators take threads off or ban posts (mostly due to commercial conflicts - or simply continual negative and/or slanderous posts) but for the most part I think they let A LOT slide.

Again, this is mostly just a request for everyone to consider the hi-jacking concept.
