250 watts would have been my choice--at the time of purchase I was greener then chaeto and the guys that sold me the system said I couldn't run them because of heat problems(they were in a coral life fixture under a wooden canopy.
Little did I know that eventually I would run the sump, refug and ballasts from the basement. Kind of hard to change now--due to cost--besides I don't think I will ever have in LPS--not after what I have seen here at what you can aim for.

Volfe - It looks like you have a little crud that's settled 1-2" under your sand bed on the right side of your pic. I have the same thing my tank and I'm thinking of kicking it all up this weekend to get it filtered out. Any thoughts? Do you think it adds phosphates to your tank?

I've got the same thing. If you stir up the bed then you stir up the useful bacteria there--which is worse IMO.
I think that is just algae on the glass. What I do if it gets too bad is take a long scaper and push is down the glass between it and the substrate.

.................if you have adequate flow across the substrated then you are not going to get a build up of phosphates--they will be kept in the water column and filtered out.
---and remember the phosphates the phosphates came from in the first place--probably over feeding

The favia is actually a Blasto merletti that got really red over the summer after I blew up my Icecap ballast and had to go back to the Nova Extreme. I think the crud in the sand bed is just algea on the glass. I'm glad you guys like it. I'll try to get a current pick this weekend.

I'll try scraping some this weekend and see if I can get it off. Thanks for the reply |

yeah--I think you will find like I did--its just algae. Just be careful not to disturb the entire sand bed. if you are worrying about the rest of the bed---get some nasessarius snails--they to a great job and stay under the sand bed--they also keep the sand bed loose and stop it from clumping over time.

any suggestions for lps that can handle alot of light and alot of flow. Before reading this thread and others on LPS I had reserved the top of the reef for sps----I'm not going to even get into them now

I am always reluctant to post pictures of my tank because the pictures always look dull. But here's my tank -- the LPS are frogspawn, hammer, torch, plate, elegance and a green edged blasto.

That elegance looks in great shape and exactly like the one I purchase a month ago. How long have you had it? Is that a sea fan in the left corner?
