Tank okay to use??

I've got probably a bizarre question. We had a 20 gallon tank given to us. Just the tank. I would have to buy a top for it, etc. My question is, it was formerly used for either a snake or an iguana. Would that mean that I can't use it for my marine tank? I'm just worried that maybe the reptiles could pass some sort of infection or whatever.

Thanks!

You can always wash the tank out really well without soap or bleach or anything. You could use a little vinegar.

However, if the tank was sold as a reptile tank, it may not be strong enough to contain the water. A reptile tank usually has a small sticker on it when it's purchased that says "for reptile use only". The best test for this is to put the tank on the back deck, fill it with water and let it sit. If the tank cracks or falls apart at the seams, it wasn't designed to be an aquarium.

Hi

also when tanks are dry docked for a long time the silicone tends to dry up. If it is an aquarium do let it sit on the deck for a while with water to see if it leaks if it doesnt blow appart. If you need to you can resilicone it. Just get pure silicone or one that says aquarium safe and not the stuff with mildew resistant stuff in it.
