my LFS has some candy cane with about 5-6 heads that are all colored and nice and about the same number whcih are obviously dead. Is this a coral that should be avoided or will the dead parts not affect the rest?

should do fine. Most candy cane polyps are not interconected onece they get done spliting.

you could even frag the dead polyps off.

Now, these are teeny. I have had them for a month and there is some growth. Hate to send a link (if this works). I don't know why I can't post a pic in a thread anymore.

i guess feeding cyclop-eeze would be good. i dont spot feed mine though and they seem fine. i dont get much growth (which im not worried about).

They grow by making their stalks longer, and by spliting their head in two whlile they grow out.
First the mouth will split and then slowly the two become seperate heads.

I think yours could handle direct light from your t5's.

i just bought one, with about 10 stalks. 2 of which are showing skeletons. i ee what you mean about each stalk being able to split. about 6 of them have 2 mouths on each stalk. will these eventually have thier own stalk? or do the newly split heads share a stalk with the original? i was gonna buy a frag of 4 heads for 15 bux but it was small, and i had no idea these things grew and split. anyone care to chime on on their methods for getting them to grow?

im not sure about methods of getting them to grow, but the split heads may grow their own stalks eventually. they may share stalks indefinatly also.

All,
I have been able to make my candy canes grow more quickly by directly feeding the polyps with a food mix (brine shrimp/selcon, DT's or phytoplex/cyclopeeze etc). I have noticed, however, that the canes take a while to acclimate to a new tank before they begin growing. I have also noticed that some colors are more sensitive to halides and do not grow as well under intense light (pink varieties). If the polyps shrink up under heavy light, i would move them to a less intense area. DMC |
