Berlin Turbo XL protein skimmer
I am going to be setting up my 110g acrylic tank very shortly and I need to get a better skimmer for it. Of course I am on a budget, what college kid isn't? I'd like to get an asm skimmer or equal but just can't afford it. A LFS near me ( that fish place in Lancaster, PA) has 30% off on certain days of the week on dry goods, so I am going to get my skimmer from there, it'd be the best deal/price. The skimmer I am looking at is a berlin turbo XL, it comes with a 550gph pump, and rated from 150-400g but we all know how those ratings go . So anyone have on of these? Experiences? Good bad? I can't afford top of the line, but I don't want a POS, heres a link for the skimmer, thanks.

this is still a little undersized for your tank but you will be much happier with it then the berlin

Why was it so bad? What did it do/not do? Not be able to sleep at night, was it noisy? Or because you would sell a POS to somebody and worried for them? Haha! Those skimmers are nice, but a little out of my price range. The berlin w/ TPP's 30% off plus tax would be under $160. I'd like to stay under $200. The ASM G2 is still over $200 even with the discount. I wouldn't mind buying something used, as long as it worked good. I just want a skimmer where I don't have to keep on messing with it to get good skimate. Any more suggestions mbbuna? Thanks for you help!

mbbuna is absolutely right. I had one many years ago and it isn't worth $20. I had to adjust it several times a day and never really got it to skim. I bought a new "Turbo" pump and added the venturi piece with no change in performance.
I've had ASM's and Octopus skimmers and they both worked very well. Even the ASM mini would be better. Check the forums for a used one and you will be much happier.

Looks like I will just have to save up for an ASM, any reccomendations? Experiences? I don't want to have to adjust it, I just want to put it in the sump and let it do its thing! I am thinking about doing the ASM G3, its only $27 more for a bigger pump/skimmer then the G2, total $230 with tax. Anyone know how long the 30% off lasts at TPP? I think that is my best bet, I see used ASM's going for new with the discount at TPP.
Any other skimmer suggestions for a reasonable price? I guess making my own is outta the question? |

Definitely look for something else, I got a PM-Bullet1 skimmer with the sedra 9000 pump, gate valve, stand and larger remote waste collector for $125 from our local clubs forum here on RC and was only 8 mos old new would have been over $500 and it skims as well as most NW skimmers I have seen

That's a good deal, I think I am going to save up for an ASM G3. I can get it brand new, warrenty and all for $230. It's rated for 250g, so should be plenty for my 110g.

I have a 60 gal pred tank w. a volitan, dogface puffer, clown and 2 damsels. I have a Prizm delux but am not overly pleased-bubbles and noisy. I have had it for a while and it does do the job but am considering an upgrade. I do need a hang on....That Pet Place is having a sale and I can get a Berlin hang on -23"-w. pump for $ 160.00. Any opinions?? When I was in sales in this industry, I used to be of the opinion that Berlin's were overpriced for their performance. If not the Berlin, any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Craig. |

Last berlin I dealt with, it ended up in the trash. Replaced with a PM 2 night and day difference. The ASM G3 isn't too bad, easy to use, seems like you're getting it for a good price too.

Yeah, they will probably come back with 30% off later next year. The only good skimmers they have is PM, but never have any or big ones in stock. ASM isn't all that from what I've researched, plus they never have the bigger ones in either.
Anyone know anything about MTC HSA 1000 skimmer? |

thats a beckett skimmer and you will need a large pressure pump to run it right. large pump= large electrical cost. (pump recommendations on this page http://www.marinetechnical.com/page8.html) i had a large duel beckett and it worked well but was hard to dial in, needed a large watt pump, the injectors needed to be cleaned at least once a week and there was no guarantee that 5min after you just cleaned the injector a little speck of something wouldn't get in the injector and you would have to clean it all over again. ill never run a beckett again

mmbuna, so should I not get the HSA 1000? I can probably get it for about $300. I was going to run it by an iwaki 40rxlt 1200gph 136 watts. My return will be a ocean runner 6500 which is about 1600gph and only 115 watts I belive. I guess I could use that on the skimmer as well? But the skimmer is 4ft tall, so head loss has to be taken into account. What skimmer would you recommend for a 360g FO?

the iwaki 40rxlt is a circulation pump and will not cut the mustard for something like the hsa. i too have been down the beckett route and would not run another one due to the constant attention i had to give it to have it skim optimally...BUT nothing outskimmed it when it was at its golden point...just how much time do you have to continually fiddle with it? 360 fo tank? look at the bermuda 8c, an aqua c ev-400, or an euroreef rc-25 are just a few suggestions you could look into as a starting point!
