Lava Rock Base
i am currently thinking of using Lava rock as a base rock in my tank. Then i plan to seed my 80lb of lava rock with 20lbs or live fiji.
What does everyone think? |

That's a fairly common approach, although there's some worries about lava rock leaching various unpleasant chemicals. I'd spring for some base rock, which can be very inexpensive, but I'm a very cautious sort.

I started with lava rock, the most popular brand sold in pet stores, the burgundy one by Feller Stone, about 14 years ago. It isn't as porus as most liverock and doesn't have a calcerous base like liverock. You can get carved pieces tho and it was only 50¢ a lb. back then!

I like Tufa better. Very porous and less chance of leaching heavy metals...
