Promise rings

What do you guys think of promise rings?

A girlfriend of mine came in to work wearing one ! I'm extreemly excited for her!

I'm jealouse that she gets three diamond rings though!

But then I got thinking about it, and the cost of the promise ring usually takes away from the cost of the origional engagement ring.

And it's like saying "I promise to promise to marry you."

Did any of you gals get a promise ring? Did any of you guys give a promise ring??

All but one person who I've known who did the promise right deal ended up with it not working out. its like a half step toward engagment, either your ready to be engaged or your not.

Nope, my husband proposed to me 4 months after we met. I made him wait 2 years to tie the knot though Promise rings seem silly to me but I suppose it's what the young men are doing now instead of giving away their class rings, etc.?

I say they're weak and stupid. It's like the old saying goes, "Either start [profanity] or get off the pot." You're either engaged or your not, and with a "promise ring" you're not! This girl's b/f is lame.

I gave my fiance a real engagement ring. Before that she got things like diamond earrings, diamond necklace, etc . . . but not a ring.

sounds like she's engaged to be engaged. if i was going to give a girl a ring, it would be an engagement ring, not a promise ring.

Seems to me a halfway measure: unless the people involved are underage and therefore unready for larger steps---which would make it appropriate---I would say it's Odd Behavior, and their business, but since you ask---I'd say for two adults otherwise unconstrained by distance, other serious and unbreakable committments [a gravely ill parent in some other country] or the like---I'm suspicious that it's a way for one of the two to pin the other down to a year or so of chastity while the other finishes up...some old business.

In other words, would I buy this pony? Not without a serious vet exam.

at this point id take a promise ring! lol me and my bf have been together 8 yrs. Ive never pushed for marrage. It was never important to me.

But now im 28, and I cant go anywhere without him without a lame guy asking if Im single. And I do love shiny objects, so a ring would be nice. like 'hey, thanks for washing my underwear for 8 years'

If theres a kid, I think there should be marriage (in my case. not everyones case)

He bought me 1 diamond ring, but its got lil saffire petals around it, and it forms a flower

I'd rather have the engagement ring first. I'd rather the guy save the money on the diamond bracelet, and put it towards the engagement ring.

He's divorced, three kids. She's MUCH younger than him, in fact, she's younger than ME! But, they are already living together....

So I guess you make a good point. THIS situation is an odd one.

I gave a promise ring when I was 20. The "promise" lasted about 3 months. This was after dating for 3 years.

Basically says I don't love you enough to want to marry you, but I'll keep you around until something better comes along.

I think promise rings are stupid. There are many other ways to express your love for someone else. Many types of jewelry, but don't think promise rings are a good idea. Either you are ready or you are not.

Where's is the engagement or promise Rolex for the man. Why should a man need to give the women a ring and she give him nothing.

That being said, I did not give my wife a promise ring, but I did give her an engagement ring.

Whatever, I think you're saying that b/c your b/f isn't buying you any nice jewelry. (I'm just kiddin' with you)

When I was buying her diamond jewelry for birthdays and Christmas, getting married wasn't in the picture. She loves her earrings and necklaces and wears them 99% of the time. She doesn't even touch her vast collection of fake jewelry anymore. And besides, the cost of the earring and necklaces wouldn't have even covered the taxes on her engagement ring.

I say she should dump this loser that can't make a Yes/No decision like a grown up should be able to do.

I had a promise ring.... in high school! I did not end up marrying that guy. Promise rings are not representative of a serious commitment, emotionally or financially.

My husband bought me a gorgeous engagement ring before we got married. I would have kicked him in the keister if he had showed up with a "promise ring."

A "Promise Ring" == I have no intention of making a commitment with you but am afraid to tell you that so I'm hoping that this diamond will extend my "privileges."

I agree with the majority of posters. A promise ring is fine... if you're in junior high school. Seriously. A promise ring is like "we're going together." I'm wearing his class ring. We're pinned.

If you're out of school, you're ready for the "real thing" (ie, an engagement ring).
