Opening a LFS

Ok, i've been toying with this idea off and on for a few years now, and would like some input from others, preferably those who do or have owned there own store. As i am not wealthy by far i'd prefer to learn as much as possible from others succeses or mistakes.

I've been wanting to open a small store of my own here in Southern MN, and would like as much input as i can. I.E. hidden costs, licenses, reputable suppliers, etc... I'm trying to do as much research as possible before i make a decision, so any bit of info would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

How's that old addage go..... "How do you make a small fortune with a LFS? Start with a large fortune."

From the 10 or so i've seen go out of business, the key is to never order fish because you need to make some money before you can order more livestock to sell to make more money...

It seems to me as though it is simply a dying industry. Look at all the specialty stores on the internet, and all the big-boxes like Petsmart. Look how few LFS's are staying alive.

I helped a friend of mine setup his store. there is a huge start up cost. display tanks plumbing etc. Lucky he has been in the business for 20+ years and does setups, tank cleaning as well as custom acrylic work.

There are a fewbusinesses around here that started in their basements. That way you can create a loyal customer base and keep overhead costs way down. The only thing that sucks is picking up the deliveries at the airport, if they come in on time.

Not to mention that it is difficult to find a supplier who will ship to your basement operation. Most good suppliers anymore require you to have a non-residential retail location.

I went to the airport to pick up fish with my friend yesterday. Winder sucks, a normally 1 hour drive turned into over 2. Once they are shipped you have to get there. I suspect Mn. would have similiar weather problems. If the airport is very far away...

The suppliers that are used don't deliver, they only ship to the airport. I don't know anything too specific, but I know that suppliers won't talk to you unless to have a business licence.

That's what I meant. Sorry it didn't quite come out the way I wanted it to. I didn't mean ship directly to the basement operations but to do business with someone with a basement operation.
