HI likuidbudderfly,
[welcome]

It's tough to recommend a fish for you not knowing how big your tank is, or what you ultimately want to keep there, but clownfish are a big favorite in the hobby, and are not only reef safe, but you can get them tank raised.

Thumbs up

Kept freshwater some years ago, but have always been hankering for a marine setup; glad that there are good people willing to share their experience and knowledge openly with a community to guide people such as me.
Thanks Skipper, good read.

Another link

Thanks for all the great resources and info.. I love RC! I've been reading boards like crazy the last few months trying to prepare for the 180 I'll be purchasing in the next week or so. Hopefully when I'm ready to fill the tank a few months from now I'll have learned enough from these forums to minimize my mistakes.

Here's a link to an easy reference compatability chart. Being a n00b I have no idea how good it is but might give us beginners a quick reference to start as we plan the inhabitants of our new tanks.

Hi, guess I'm the new guy this time around. Growing up I had a number of FW tanks that usually did well (being a kid and all, I didn't want to wait the first few times, so everyone knows those outcomes), but I've always loved diving and marine tanks. Soooo, here I am, attempting to start one. Now my primary concern is my job, the Navy, I will be moving most likely once every 2-3 years, as short a distance as from say Florida to Virginia, or as great a distance as from Hawaii to Italy (not likely though, think more Hawaii to Virginia as my max). How difficult is it to move a marine tank? Obviously I don't want a large one, 30 gal max (25 probably), but the fastest I could get everything back from breakdown to setup would be 48 hours if not a little more. I dedicate myself to something once I start it, particularly something that could be as rewarding as this, but can the tank life (I'd like to do a reef tank) stand up to something like this? I've been reading, but not finding much about moving, have I missed a good thread somewhere? Any help would be much appriciated, I really look forward to getting into this hobby and getting to know everyone here at RC. Thanks again.

Well, if you're in the navy, you could just drag the tank behind your ship, no problem

Just kidding, of course - I made a 1000 km move a few ywars ago without any loss, but that was made in about 16 - 18 hours... 48 hours would be quite difficult, IMHO.

Of course, you could always sell your tank to one of the new replacements, and start up with a LARGER tank after every move.

Give it a try with a relatively small tank, and see how it works out.
