Much thanks to both of you!

Landon, I've had the "Kenya Tree" (put in parenthesis because I was told it was a colt, but I agree with your ID) for awhile now, but it has since grown considerably--as most softies do.

Whoa, talk about resurrection! Currently--however only temporarily--I have all 6 horses in a 25 gallon until the 46 is ready to go. I'm waiting on a particular someone who will be arriving in two days.

Well anyway, here are a few older pics for y'all (yes, I said y'all) -

And a few more...

Okay, hopefully that's enough to satisfy. Have a good one!

Thanks guys--and girls! I do love taking photos, I just wish I had more time!! It seems like I hardly have time for myself nowadays with school and the like.

I can't believe you guys didn't know about them already! I was given 4 beautiful horses--three H. Reidi and one H. comes--by a customer at work. She was forced to move and wanted them to go to a good home, and apparently I had made a decent impression in the past. Now I have two males and 4 females, and I'm sure they are eagerly awaiting their new (larger) home.

Kayla,
They are beautiful! How do you do it all? What camera have you been using now? I'm looking at buying another.

Kayla,
You may have done this, but can you create just one summary post that describes what you have done to create your sea horse tank? What is in it, what mistakes did you make, what is your current routine?

I'm sorry for such a delayed response. I've been quite busy as of late (as always it seems) with school, work, and tank projects, but the business is finally dying off--for now. Anyway, my apologies.

Melissa, thanks! Well, the camera actually isn't the most high-tech, nor most expensive, but I have found out (through extensive tweaking and practice) what works. It's a Canon Powershot A95: 5.0 mp, 4.1x digital zoom, etc. For the money (especially now), it's a great camera. My only complaint is the macro; I can take much better macros with other, lower-end cameras, but all-in-all, it's decent.

For taking the pics, I adjust the white balance with the AWB feature (a lifesaver) and attempt macro mode. Seahorses are easy to photograph in that they often don't move much at all, allowing for a non-flash shot and thus more color and less stress on the horse. However, sometimes I do use flash in order to get the intricacies of their body. Also, as you probably know, lots of practice makes perfect; I usually like 5 at best out of the 50 pics I take at one time, but that's what makes the experience so fun--finding the good ones. I hope this helps, and please let me know which camera you pick!

Max, you picked a good time to ask for a summary, because the horses just underwent another huge tank move. They were all in a 25 gallon tank with poor filtration and far too minimal space (6 horses and two other fish), but my plans for a larger tank were finally executed last night. They were all moved into my 46 bow that was cleared of all LPS, SPS, and a huge anemone. I will post pics and further tank info later, after the lights come on, but I am very pleased with the results so far.

As for my mistakes...where do I begin? This whole experience has been one huge learning process for me, but I think I finally feel comfortable possessing the knowledge I now have. Here are a few words of advice that have resulted from my mistakes -

1) If you can, buy a larger tank for your seahorses. A common misconception is that seahorses should be in a small tank to help with ease of feeding and such, but I have found this to be quite the contrary--at least in my experience. Considering the amount of food needed to keep seahorses well-fed and happy, small tanks take the high nutrition load much harder than larger ones. Training your horses to eat at one specific spot in the tank is not hard at all, which eliminates the feeding issue.

2) If you get a male and a female, prepare for babies. As long as the horses are happy and of the correct age, they will breed--and on a frequent basis.

3) Buy the "good stuff" the first time around. This applies to almost everything in this hobby, but I am especially talking about food and the like. It's amazing the difference in quality of food. A good thread that explores this fact is
here. By far, PE and Hikari Mysis are the best--and many notches above the rest.

Again, I hope this helps. There are probably many more I cant remember at 8:30 in the morning after almost no sleep, but I will add more as I remember. I will also snap some pics of the newly set-up tank.
