Chiller ???

I got a 1/20 chiller the other day and was wondering about something. Does the chiller pump have to be on all the time? I mean, is it constantlly running and when the tank gets hot the chiller kicks in right? Im planning on getting an Acjr soon. Can i turn on the power to the pump & to the chiller to get it cooling at the preset temp. with the controller?

The pump does run all the time. the chiller will turn on when the water temp gets above the preset temp.

Are there any drawbacks if i just set up my pump and chiller to turn on only when needed?

for my tank at home, i have both the chiller and chiller pump controlled by my ReefKeeper 2. The chiller and its pump turns off after the water is cool to the desired temperature.

for my tank at work, chiller pump is always on since i do not have a controller.

btw, i have my chiller pump come on .3 degrees sooner than the chiller. this lets the water circulate through the chiller before it actually starts cooling.

haven't seen any issues with having it come only when needed. if anything, it helps keep the heat from the pump down.
