How do I eliminate noise from wet/dry? (pic)

I have my tank running with fresh water to test the plumbing. I removed the bio-balls from the wet-dry filter. The water enters the top and would drip on the bio-balls, but it now drips down into the water at the bottom. What suggestions do you have to quite this down? It's extremely noisy. I thought of a filter pad floating or putting in an piece of plastic for the water to drip on, then flowing onto the lower chamber. Help, need ideas!!!????

A piece of plastic or lexan would work if you put it at an angle. I don't think I would use the media, for the same reason you took out the bio balls. (unless you change it every few days)

I'm also wondering this same thing. I have a very similar sump setup on one of my tanks and if I remove all the media (filterfloss & bioballs) I get nothing but microbubbles in the display.

That waterfall that you have made will create them and they get pulled up through your return. Stopping the waterfall stops the bubbles.

Should I also take out the fiber filter pad at the top? How bout a piece of pvc house siding, I have some scrap pieces around I can use. Can cut it so it angles downward. I don't get any bubbles at all in the display so far.

It's a Cap 1800 that came with the wet-dry. So far it seems ok.

The water coming from the AGA overflow and the return pump goin keeps thw water at that level. Can't do much to adjust it.

so if you add more water to the sump, the pump pushes it out faster then the overflow can take it back?

If you add more water your sump level has to rise.

Just poured a 1/2 gal of water in the sump. The sump level stayed up with the extra 1/2 gallon.

Do you have stuff in that sump? With no heater, filtration media, or skimmer.. (in the pic) why do you have it?

Just took out the plastic tray & fiber pad at the top. Now the only thing in it is the pump. Maybe if I add some pvc pipe so they water goes directly down into the water in the sump that may fix it? Right now the water is just dumping into the sump.

Why on earth are you using it like that? Either w/media or macro algae. As is, you should sell it, the water movement from the return you could get from a pwr head instead. I was in your shoes a few months ago, I bought a 10 gallon, put it in place of the filter, used the flex piping to fill the 10 gallon and the return pump to put the water back to the main tank. I got a 23 watt PC from home depot and put some sand and macro algae in the 10. Now my phos and nitrates are 0 and I have alot of pods growing in there, this is a million times better than an empty wet/dry..and cheap, all you would need is a small tank and some macro.

I asked here a few months ago if I should sell the wet/dry or not. Got a 50-50 for keeping or selling it so I kept it. Like I said, just making the best of what I have. Yea, the way I have it it's just for circulation of water for the main tank.

You can do a lot with an old W/D.

For example:

On the right the sump takes drainage from the main tank into a filter sock. On the left is a drain from a remote fuge. Sump also has (black) float valve for auto top- off. Return pump is external to keep water temp low. No microbubbles enter the main tank because of the filter sock and baffles.

Move your hose down into the bottom of the tank. Take out the eggcrate and foam pad/tray. Rig some kind of filter floss Like Saltz did to remove micro bubbles or glue in some baffles. Where is your skimmer going?

If you extend the intake from the bottom to make it long enough to reach the bottom , the waterfall will stop.

If that white thing holding the filter pad is removable, take it out and try to put the hose in the water. Is it quiter?

You'll have to figure something out, like a micron sock holder.

Something like this might work.

Also FWIW, fresh water is noiser than salt. Salt water is a little more dense and it won't make as much noise with salt water
