Skimmer vs. Refugim
I was just wondering which is better for a 46 gallon reef tank. I do water changes every 1-2 weeks. Is a refugim better? Or a skimmer? What are their differences and what can they be used for?

just depends on what you plan on keeping.. if you plan on keeping sps you might want to use the sump/refugium for macroalgae plus a skimmer
if your bioload is heavy you may want to want use both as well. if you have a low bioload or dont have corals that demand really clean water then you probaby get away with the sump/refugium with macroalgae |

Both! A fuge is basically a sump with light and macro algae growing creating a place for pods etc to grow. A skimmer is a device to remove excess nutrients. The fuge will remove some of the excess nutrients a good skimmer will remove a lot more.
Setup a fuge with a skimmer is your best bet. |

Both. If you want to add an additional nitrate reduction capability, consider a remote deep sand bed.

Well, I already have a pretty cheezy protien skimmer and an OK filter that takes up alot of space. The filter sucks up larger pieces of crud in the tank. Would a Refugim be better than that filter? What if I do water changes every 1-2 weeks? I think I'll keep the skimmer though.
How expensive are refugim, one for a 46 gallon tank? |
