Any landscapers in the house? Want to make a privacy hedge.

My wife and I just bought our first house two months ago and i'd like some privacy from the street in front and from my neighbors. A fence is just too much money for me but I can handle some bushes or something. Something that grows 5-6 feet and doesn't get too wide would be nice. Haven't had time to do much research yet. Any suggestions?

well did you want something busy or stalk like? alot of the pompass grasses will get tall and thick and block out alot of vision. bamboo also make a good blocker but it can get kinda big.

Hemlock, redbud, lilac, boxwood, spirea. Spirea grows fast and tall, has a nice white flower in spring; a lattice/trellis with clematis, a big 'ol rhododendron if you're in the hills and buy it big to begin with. They grow slow up here, though. Good luck-

Hire a bunch of ugly people to come over and sunbathe in your yard. Your neighbors will build the fence for you.

If you want year round evergreens is the only thing that comes to mind. You could also do a dual hedge
Evergreens for year round, and lattice w/vines or flowering bushes in the front for color
How long of a hedge?
Why only 5-6' tall?

I am using/growing Rose-O=Sharons for a hedge at my house
I have about 5 dozen growing in different areas.
Once they flower & I know their colors I move them to where I want. Very easy to transplant & they reseed & grow more
I have 4 planted so far wher I want & they are filling out
Also lilacs make a very colorful hedge

Thanks for the suggestions all, i'm going to make a list and talk to a local nusery. Scuba_Dave, I figured 5 or 6 feet would be a pretty decent height to start with for privacy reasons. I'd like to mix up some other plants to fill in gaps and add color or something. I really don't have much of a green thumb but i'm learning as I go.

Only use Rose of Sharons if you can easily mow around them. I have them bordering my front as well, but I also have a 3' bed next to them. They self-sow like CRAZY, so every year I'm pulling literally thousands of them out of the bed. Poor planning on my part!

But...they grow quickly, fill well when properly pruned, and are nice in the summer.

by rose of sharon are you refering to althea. they drop their leaves in the winter. i live in a warmer climate so i don't think i can help much, but a juniper (of some sort) hedge could work. slower growing though.

Yes, Rose of Sharon is Althea, and they are deciduous.
