Don't look if your afraid of spiders!!

If found this guy living near my deck over the summer. I have no idea what kind of spider it is. If you could help id it I'd appreciate it. I fed it moths and ants when I could. The spider was about the size of a quarter before it died (or maybe it just moved somewhere else). It had caught a hornet when I took these pics.

Pics...

I'm not that good with spiders but I believe this is an Orb-Weaver Spider of some form. My guess is araneus diadematus.

It looks evil. What happens if it bites you? That's all I need to know.

I was wondering that as well.

I actually had three of these around the house. Their webs were at least the diameter of a basketball.

Last summer was the first that I had ever seen them. Thanks for all of the info thus far, I'll do some research with the info that I have.

Thanks for the comments on the pics

I've read where some barnyard varieties can post cryptic messages in their webs, in one instance concerning the quality of a small pig before it entered the state fair.

My family has a place at the beach in South Carolina. We find lots of poisionous snakes and spiders. Usually Brown recluses, and copperheads. But I've also seen Cottonmouths, and even coral snakes and black widows. This is probably because the house sits on the edge of a 17000 acre wildlife preserve.

I wasn't sure how bad the bite from a Brown Recluse was until I looked up pictures on the internet. I'm wearing shoes from now on when I go outside.

Reknowned arachnithologist (sp?) EB White got it...

I can't quite make out the message in this one's web?

more exact taxonomic identification, down to the genus/species, is contingent on a proper translation of its webbicus messagus
