"Seaside communities in Japan have tried to capitalize on the menace by developing novel jellyfish dishes from tofu to ice cream, but for some reason the recipes have failed to take off."

I have had dishes with jellyfish that were fairly good. Some are rather salty, though.

And then right before that statement, they say:

Spikes in population have occurred in the past, notably in 1958, but consecutive outbreaks in 2002 and 2003 prompted the government to seek reasons and solutions.

SO are they telling us that global warming is not a new phenomenon? I'm with you. Can't find out what the problem is? Blame it on global warming.

Maybe the jellyfish's natural predators(if they have any) have been decimated and that's why it is showing up in huge numbers again?

I think whale is the only thing that would eat the huge jelly fish. Well, since the Japanese keep hunting all the whale there are none to reduce the number of the jelly fish. Just my thought.
