Extreme Tank Makeover!

I've been planning to upgrade my tank from a 90 gallon to a 220 gallon for a while. Looks like this will be the weekend.

Here's some of the new equipment:

Deltec AP702 Skimmer with Self Cleaning Head
Deltec EcoChiller (2 fan unit)
Deltec Calcium reactor PF601
Deltec Fluidize Reactor FR509 (For ROWA)
Deltec KM500 Kalk Stirrer
(I guess you know where I bought the new tank, )

2 - 10K 400w MH
1 - 20K 400w MH

2 VHO

220 Gallon Closed Loop
2 Sea Swirls for random current on top.
1 Oceans Motions 4 way. This will drive the water to 4 lines to the bottom of the tank. 2 will flow at a time and shift the water from side to side. The lines will be hidden by the live rock.

Custom sump to mount the chiller and skimmer. Overflow tap at the top of the sump and connected to the drain. Skimmer self cleaning head is also connected to the drain.

Automatic RO/DI top off. The water source is connected to a hot/cold temperature control valve to keep the water around 78 - 80 degrees for efficient RO/DI operations. Reduces the waist water.

Custom stand that extends behind the tank about 6 inches deeper than most 220 stands. This is to accommodate the custom sump. I also mounted 4 Power Strips with switches back behind the tank. The stand has side boards that will slide back to expose the switches.

I have a side cabinet that will hold a 25 gallon salt water mixing tank with mixing and transfer pumps. All I have to do is add salt and open the RO/DI valve. It has an overflow tap as well in case of over fill. To change water all I have to do is turn on the sump discharge and then turn on the salt water transfer pump. No more hauling those d*mn 7 gallon buckets!

The lights will be on the same timers that I have today.

Last weekend I added 4 supports under the floor consisting of 4 concrete piers and 4 - 4x4's. I also had plumbing (hot/cold and sewer ran under the floor to the tank location.

So,,,,,, now the work begins. Tomorrow I empty the existing 90 gallon. I'll move all SPS, etc. to several holding tanks over night. Marvin will be here Sunday morning and we hook up the new tank. I'll take photo's along the way and start posting as soon as I get a chance.

Hey Prop_Frags (Michael) are you available on Sunday?

The tank install went great, but my friggin back hurts!

It's a beast of a system - for sure! The envy of the Atlee reef keepers club...or any club for that matter. Sweeeeet set up!

Yep.. Helped Larry move his 220 a fews weeks back, and hands down the heaviest weight I personally have ever felt. A 220 is huge.. Too much tank for me...

We're finishing the final touches. Lights and RO/DI and Self Cleaning Head water. That should be done tonight.

I still need to add about 40 more gallons to top off the tank. I've got that in my frag tank.

Gota go. Marvin says the canopy is ready!

Got the RO/DI and Self Cleaning Head water hooked up tonight. I need to hook up another circuit so I can run all 3 400W MH's.

The tank is still a little cloudy. I've lost some corals in the process.

Hey Marvin, if you get some time (Ha!) can you post the pics?

Hey Tommy, Darrol and Rick and others,

I'll host a swap meet soon and have everyone over. I guess I better do it soon if I want may tank to look as clean as I heard yours was!

Charlie, wish I had the ozone back for a while during the initial setup. I think that's the only thing I'm missing right now!

Mike, you said your friggin back hurt. Don't you mean your "fragging" back?

Cnelson (Cindy I thing), I'm beginning to see what you mean about the big tanks. Hopefully this one will take a lot of the burden off me for a change.

Charlie,

Thanks for the offer. I'm going to wait it out. The PH is coming back up nicely now. The water is getting pretty clear. Salinity is right on the money. I've got to start running the other water quality tests now.

I'm going to build a carbon filter out of a Calc Reactor 2nd stage from Percision Marine this weekend. That should get the water perfectly clear. I've got ROWA in there now.

BTW, one thing I didn't consider. The new tank is much closer to my recliner than the old tank. It's also a lot taller and has 400W MH's versus the old 250w. The light shines right down on me in my chair.

So that means the next time you see me I might have a sun tan on the left side of my face. I'm not kidding either!

Do they may curtains for tanks? Ha!

Looks great Bill! I absolutely love the matching side cabinet. I had the same thought awhile ago, and still might do it.

Congratulations on the new system!

Things are coming along nicely. Just a few things left to do.

Done:
RO/DI hooked up
Kalk Stirrer installed
Calc Reactor installed
Chiller temperature controller installed. Works great!
ROWA installed
Mixing tank installed and making new water now
Self Cleaning Head installed

To Do:
An electrician is coming by today (hopefully) to hook up a dedicated 20 amp circuit. I can't run all 3 MH's until this is done.

I've got to add more sand from the old tank.
Epoxy RO/DI junctions between hose types. I don't trust the black tubing sleve that I'm using, although it seems to work great.
Epoxy puddy corals and rocks in place
Check water parameters and adjust Calc reactor.
Hook up light timers
Hook up Self Cleaning Head timer
Unhook the Oceans Motions and clean the sand out of it. It got in there when I added the sand and it's not turning too well. Not looking forward to doing this!
Add light block out divider between the two hoods. Right now there's a gap there and light shows through it.
Take more photos/post photos
Think of something else to do! Oh yea - buy more fish and corals!

Sounds like things are coming together. Marvin is starting mine tonight(hopefully, as you said). I am putting the Ocean Motions on my tank also, tell me how the sand got in it, so maybe I can avoid that.
What are you going to use to block the light?
One other question, I am going with 2- 250MH and 1-400, do you think the 400's are a better choice for all three?

Tank looks great, thanks for the updates.
