Predatory Snails

I've had a colony of Orange polyps slowly disapear over the past month. Tonight I discovered a small snail in what remained of there colony. The shell is white and black in kind of a checkerboard pattern. The "foot" is black and there is also a white cone extending from the fleshy area. Does this sound like any kind of known polyp eating snail?

Yep, the cone shaped "trapdoor" tells you that it is a sundial snail. These are polyp eaters and you should try to remove them as you see them.

Here is the picture of mine.. They are sundail snails which prey on zoanthid, be careful and remove as many as possible. I found them and quickly remove it. Good luck to you.

The good news is they seem to all like the same zoos better than others, so if you find them in one or two colonies, they'll all be in similar colonies. I pulled 8 out of one colony, and there wasn't another anywhere else to be seen.

I just got some more zoos and put a small frag where the former colony had been. All the polyps where gone the following morning. I dont see any more snails so I'm not sure what took out this batch.

Look around, they may have blown away, or a crab might have torn them loose.

If it is just happening over night it is likely a crab. It could have easily blown away also, but I would keep an eye out for a crab. Turn your lights off for about an hour or two then turn them back on and see if you see any crabs or anything.

I had another frag(8-12) polyps dissapear last night. I normally work nights and leave a few minutes after the lights turn off. Luckily I'm working days this week. I guess its time for a good ole fashion stakeout.
