Bulkhead Question

I am having a tank built for me. I am trying to figure out the diameter of 1.5" bulkheads and 2" bulkheads are so that I can finish the diagrams. I mean like, the hole in the middle is 1.5" and 2", not the whole bulkhead.

Does anyone here know the diameter of 1.5" and 2" bulkheads including the "Lip" that hugs the glass on the very edges?

Did that make sense? I keep asking the guy that's building it for me what size these bulkheads are, but I think I'm confusing him because he doesn't write back .

I allready asked this over in the Large tanks Forum, but Figured I would throw it up here too as some of you DIYers gotta know the answer.

TIA

Re: Bulkhead Question

It varies with bulkhead manufacturers. You would do best to go and get your bulkheads and then tell the tank builder what size to drill the holes. For example, I have two different 1.5" bulkheads here. Both will fit in a hole slightly smaller than 2.5", but one's "lip" measures 3.5" and the other measures 3.25"

My 2" BH from Marine Depot measures 3 & 7/8" across. The hole required is 3", but when measured it could slip into a 2&3/4" hole.

Ditto what gev said. "Best to get your bulkheads in hand, before drilling your holes." I went w/ AquaticEcosystems for my BH's, as they post ID and OD in their catalog, but still, to ensure I could get the bulkheads when my tank arrived (and ensure they measured the BH's right when sizing them), I ordered mine and checked them, before telling my tank builder what hole size to drill.

Ahhh, there's the numbers I was looking for.

I think I would rather go with the Bulkheads that are going to come with the tank. I don't want to risk ANY screw ups in that department. As long as they are 1.5" ID then I will be fine.

I'm just having trouble finishing the diagrams of the overflow because the placement of the holes is VERY dependant on the overall diameter of the bulkheads. Since the diameters very with brand then I guess I am left waiting on the builder's reply telling me the overall Diameter, but after a few days with no replies one starts to get pretty irritated. Maybe I should email him again and rephrase the question.

Thanx for all of your help guys.
