The word 'Japanese' in a coral description
I saw a coral on ebay listed as 'Japanese Acan Maxima' yesterday. To me it looks like a lobo and not an acan, but thats a different subject.
 Anyways, when I questioned the vendor, not only about it not being an acan, but about the fact that acan maxima isn't even found anywhere NEAR Japan, here is the response I got regarding the description:"Japanese is a term used in the hobby for describing high end Trachophyllia and Acan due to the prices the Japanese hobbyeist pay for them. It's not a description of geography where they come from." Is this really a trend I am not aware of?

The guy you are talking about is a.... many words fit here.. none positive...The ecoralz guy right? many here have had some form of bad experience with him... Maximas are not from Japan... and your on target... its not a trend... Its HIS trend LOL he lables everything "Jap" or "Japanese" to lure the noob buyer that does not know any better

I purchased a couple of things from this guy about a month ago. First of, shipping was a joke: $80 for 4 pieces. Secondly, he didn't include one of the items I ordered and only reimbursed me for that piece, no shipping. His online store is called cquarium, but uses ecoralz as his ebay store. He often puts the same piece up for auction on ebay while it is still for sale on his site. Very poor customer service. Buyer beware!

Ive now coined the term for corals of mine.
"argolactinite" i will now be charging premium prices for my argolactinite bubble algae, and the very rare, expensive, argolactinite "glass like" anemone's that grow extremely well.

Looks like alot of this guy's pictures on ebay are very manipulated with contrast and color. that's one sure sign.
it's sad that so many people are ruining this hobby with Greed. it's expensive enough already without having to worry about being ripped of with buying common corals marked up 3 times by being called rare. |

Doc don't get me started (LOL) the funny thing is he quotes descriptions for the Jen Veron Coral Of the World Volumes & in Volume 3 under Mussidea is the same lobo w/ the same color morph labled Lobophyllia Hemprichii. What a scam!

i was thinking lately the reference to japanese corals was to corals that seem to have 3 or more colors in them and sort of along the same lines as "rainbow" ... and someone had thought the brains in particular coming from near japan had this coloration due to the waters there.
To say its because of high prices is like saying "Hi I am going to charge you an arm and a leg for my crappy coral and you're going to fall for it because I made a slick euphemism" gah.

Actually, the multiple keywords in his listings is against ebay policy. It is called keyword spamming. One way to get it under control is to report the seller to ebay.
BTW, I got an e-mail back from this guy this morning telling me he was going to report ME to ebay for using his pic in this thread.
