Vitamin C
Hi all, first time on reef central... be gentle with me!
I subscribe to a UK forum where the "vodka method" of nitrate control has reared it's drunken head again, and someone suggested sugar as an alternative... albeit a cloudier one! Does vitamin C powder work in the same way? I know it doesn't cloud the tank, cos i used it for years as a catalyst for calcium uptake by corals, before i moved out the UK! |

[welcome]
Neither vodka, sugar, nor vitamin C will cloud the water UNLESS enough is added to cause a substantial bacterial bloom. The bacterial species driven by these additions are likely to be different. I have no idea which might be preferable, if any. In general, I'm not a fan of these processes as they reduce O2 and drive bacterial growth in ways that may or may not be beneficial or detrimental beyond the nutrient reduction, but many folks here in the US have at least tried to use both ethanol and/or sugar. Why did you think it worked as a catalyst for calcium uptake in corals?

It was something I read in Practical fishkeeping (UK title) many years ago. it was suggested that if calcium needed replenishing, then strontium would too, but vitamin c helped the uptake of strontium. as i was using KSM at the time, I decided that I would start dosing 1/2 teaspoon of vit c powder, once a week! i think (but can't be 100% sure) it was from a piece by theil... it was a long time ago!
I'll be totally honest, I never kept records of what looked better or worse, but I do remember that it was the best my tank had looked (algae-wise) Incidently, we also sprinkled it over the food of our 13yr old dog who had been diagnosed with terminal leukaemia, and he lived another two years! and... when added to coffee, made the best hangover cure i've ever found!

The vitamin C may well have driven bacteria growth and nutrient reduction, but I doubt it helped any with calcium.
