what about dropping a mineral pill, eg, mg, K, into the sump to dissolve?

Just wondering if it might be feasible to dose by letting a human-intended mineral supplement dissolve slowly in the sump.

Seems to me the purity ought to be ok. Stuff's always in the house, unlike buying yet one more huge bottle of additive...

Crazy? Drawbacks?

Many tablets use phosphate and/or silicates in the formulation to ease tablet formation, so read the bottles carefully. For magnesium, it will be very expensive as well. For something like potassium, it may be a good option.

Potassium was the one I was wondering most about. Seems like you need it so seldom, and I already have some. I'll take a real close look at contents.

If it doesn't have any undesirable ingredients, that should be an OK way to go. Others have done it with KCl tablets.

thank you for giving me this link Randy.. are there any "undesirable ingredients" with KCl tablets.

No, I've never tested it. When Ron Shimek did this study, few folks had depleted potassium. The average came out a tad higher than NSW:
