Closed loop nozzle count

Hi Anthony,

I am building a closed loop for a 67G project. I am going to mount the manifold at the top of the tank and am wondering your suggestion for the number of nozzles. I know you recommend 50 to 60X turnover so I suppose I am looking at 3000GPH and not sure how many nozzles I should divide this between.

My thoughts were a manifold of 1" or 1 1/4" feeding 1/2" loc-line finttings

36 X 18 X 24 on the tank
I will post photos of this project as soon as I get it in gear

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

cheers, my friend

the tank is small enough to likely get by with a 1" loop... but by all means, if you can fit/tolerate larger - please do.

as for outlets... it needs to be adjusted as per tank size.

In this case... the guide of about 1 running tee per tee gallons minimum will be fine. Plus... have some extras around to cap or open as needed in time.

I'm thinking three each across the long sides and two each across the short sides. Of these ten... have 6-7 running off of your ~ 3000 gph pump and enjoy about 400 gph per nozzle after head/friction loss.

This is a decent ballpark to start with. You can finesse (smaller/larger or more/less tees) in time.

do keep us posted

Anthony

Thanks, I did get inline valves for the loc-line for flow adjustment. My goal is a reef ready tank that is free from powerheads and plumbing. :My math says I may need to split this system in half however. Run between 1200 and 1500gph on each side.

I do like the idea very much, of course Kudos to you.

Powerheads and the like are just dreadful to me. Beyond being eyesores... they are additional ports to clean, trap/kill fish and inverts, impart heat into the water, additional shock hazards as the epoxy seals leak/breach in time, etc. Just dreadful devices ultimately for big jobs.

Keep on rockin with that manifold and do let us know how it progresses, please

I have ordered "Quiet one 6000" pumps and have never owned one before but by all I can read, they are extremely quiet. (hope this really is the case)

My other tanks are all on Iwaki pumps and hope I do not regret this change

I opted to go with a dual system for redundancy sake. At least if one fails I do not lose the entire system this way.

The refuge is going to be run with an "Air lift" as it will be at tank level and I would rather not add any more heat to the system.
