Looking foward to that pic waterfaller1 I know when they first come in they easily can get confused with a handfull of corals out there. Some Goniopora make it hard to tell sometimes, especially the red ones.
I need to post some updated pics of my collection too. Finally got a few pieces off the sand and mounted and are encrusting just nicely. The diversity in availability of various morphs definately seems to be seasonal. Been awhile since Ive seen any come in that havent been around most of the year already. -Justin

Leptos are so hot right now! Haha. It seems like every niche has an enthusiast. What are some other not too common lps that people collect vigilantly?

Hey Justin, you mentioned a chimney stack earlier on this page. Is it normal for lepestras to form this and what is it's purpose?

Hello anomie
Completely normal, and are amongst many who can get this. It actually starts with a vermetid snail, the kind that coil up with an encrusted shell and spread their 'webbing' to filter feed. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rs/index.php Through time the leptastrea grow over this with tissue and skeleton giving it almost a digitata outword growth appearance. This will happen with sps as well, often in plating and encrusters like montipora capricornis for example. My morbidness enjoys watching the "race" between coral and vermetid, as the vermetid tries to keep up with the encroaching coral. The purpose? With all corals, merely the constant struggle and compitition for light and realestate within the reef -Justin

Thanks for the answer Justin.
My lepestra has a chimney stack and came that way from the store. I have never seen anything come out of the stack and when you mentioned it, I thought it was a some kind of "something" particular with this type of coral. Not the greatest picture, but you can see the chimney stack where the bubbles are. |

Nice piece they are completely reef safe and make for good filter feeders. Although can populate a tank quickly and the large ones can be annoying to the corals when they have there mucous web out. In such cases I found they can be pried off with either a hard object or bone cutters work great.
Looks like you have yours in good spot, thanks for sharing -Justin
