Tank dimensions would be helpful as well as what you plan to keep.

tank dimensions are: 36"L 18W 19T, I just did the tank volume calculations here at RC and I think it said it was 43g not 40.

I would like to keep SPS and the common corals like xenia, etc.
I have T5's(4 39w), but the only thing I don't like about them is that I don't get the shimmer effects.

Both are the same price. Watts are determined by the ballast you use.

This depends on how colorful you want your corals plus using 3 will give you the choice of using mixed bulbs. Personally I would go with two 400w 20k on the ends with a 14k in the middle.

Start with two mounted 10-12 inches high. If you need more coverage or intensity, get a third LA3 and lower all reflectors to 9 inches.

400w are designed for displays >= 24 inches

250w are designed for displays <= 24 inches

PAR is a different animal altogether. Make it easy on yourself and get three 250w MH with LA3. And start with 10k bulbs.

Do you want color or growth?

10k = more PAR than 20k

20k = provides excellent color, of course, depends on brand and ballast combination

I am not going to comment on 14k bulbs because I have not used them.

My current setup has 400w 10k's with no 03 supplementation.
