The battle is going well ( for the moment ) I think 1 generation of nudis was wiped out but I am sure the next is coming soon. I am keeping a close eye on the possible problem spots. The coral banded shrimp and the wrasses are doing a good job. I have not lost any monti's up to now. The damaged piece seems to be recovering. |

I have changed my skimmer. This is the Korallen Zucht revolution (large version )
It produces finer foam and more scum then my Bubble King. ( I could hardly beleive it ) KZ claims it does not take out as much plankton and elements as other skimmers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi Jwre, I noticed in one of your pictures you had a few sand sifting stars. How are they doing in your large tank? Do they help contribute to your very clean sandbed?
I have a 400gal reef that I am thinking of adding 1 or 2 sand stars to help keep the surface of my sand bed clean. BTW it is only a 2.5inch deep bed. |

Thanks JWRE, I have added 1 star to see how it does. If there is a large improvement I'll add some more. My biggest problem is that my tank is on the main floor of my house with lots of windows. So there is alot of direct sunlight that hits the tank and I get some solid dusting of algae on the gravel by the end of the day. Maybe time to go Zeo but on my system (180g FO, 300g sump, 400g reef) all running together it would cost a small fortune to run Zeo.

How does the KZ skimmer introduce bubbles into the skimmer... a regular venturi, or something more complicated? I have seen the huge thread over at zeovit.com, but couldnt figure it out.

I have heard from others that it looks alot like a beckett injector, but never seen a picture to confirm. The thing is, some sort of venturi is no more 'plankton-friendly' than a regular beckett here in the US... so I find it hard to believe. Also, I have referenced info from Sprung & Delbeek where they show that little to none of the phyto that naturally exists in a closed system/aquarium is actually in the water column like in nature... so the skimmer sounds like alot of hype and false claims to me. And in the end, using a venturi mechanism on a pump means 'lots-o-watts' being used by whatever pump is feeding it, and without as much air intake.

![]() Plankton friendly or not, element sparing or not I see that it sucks out a whole lot of scum, much more then my former skimmer. This I know for sure ! ![]() |

The new skimmer is still performing very well. No increased PE on SPS for now but richer colour.
I have been pulling out some live rock that was piled up against one of the side walls to improve water movement. I was shoked to see how much dirt had accumulated under the rocks ! The cyano I had is rapidly disappearing. PH 7,9-8,1 KH 7-8 SG 1025 CA 430 MG 1340 NO3 2 PO4 0 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
