If real estate costs so much they should charge more, not less. Personally I think that there should be a minimum level of care of these animals and if stores can't afford to take care of their animals at this minimal level then they shouldn't be in the business. Its unfair to kill fish and other animals simply because the rent is high.

I have never been to a wholesaler but have heard that some are good and some are bad. I can't control the wholesalers because I dont shop there and neither do 99% of the people. However, If I shop at a fish store that takes good care of their animals, it is more likely than not that they will buy from wholesalers who also take better care of their animals.

I wish I could have made it to the BAR wholesaler field trip about 1/2 a year ago. people that went said that the wholesaler was pretty good about husbandry and for the most part, the fish looked healthy

also a lot of the time the wholesale catalog price isn't the price they pay. Most are standard price but if you buy so many pieces it's drop by so many dollars. Would you beleive the invoice price on a car is the rpice the dealer actually got it in ? same goes for everything else.

On topic...

I think it is unfair that, oh, about once each year people begin to publicly decry 6th Ave's husbandry practices and try and start a boycott and run them out of business. Purchasing a fish when it is brought in at their bag sale isn't any more risk to the fish or your tank than purchasing from one of the mail order / wholesale houses in the Los Angeles area. In exchange for a cheap purchase price, it is up to you to quarantine and acclimate the fish.

The place isn't evil.

Basically what I've been seeing is if you go to 6th Avenue, you are cheap. You don't know a lick about any of those people so stop making accusation about them. Everyone like to go to stores of their choice so why not leave it at that.

And in reality, does anyone think people go to 6th because of their reputation for having quality?

I don't know if I would call it 'judging' people, but patronzing a place that obviously cares little about its live product is something to think about, especially if someone believes themself to be a conscientious aquarist. I think if 6th Ave. was the same store, but expensive, there would be a lot more outcry. $$ can be a powerful motivation in many ways.

I personally wouldn't say that was a nice fish store either.. unfortunately I never went there, I wasn't the poster, I was just commenting on what the original person who posted the picture said about it. The picture was a little on the small side, but yes, culturally speaking here in America it typically not acceptable to have fish hanging in bags all around the store instead of in tanks. I realize there are cultural differences between the two places.

And if you would of actually read my post, you'd see I have not been to any Chinese fish stores. I simply made a mention of some stories people have told me about stores in China, and tried to make a cultural connection. Just like *I* see in china town here in San Francisco, I have seen live animals out in the street like turtles, etc, that are used as food, this is a cultural thing, they don't do that at most other stores in the US. As a result I tried to make a similar connection with the fish store.

Now you comment about others being to only 1% of the fish stores, yet you mention some nice ones you saw in Shanghai, have you also been to many other fish stores around the entire country of china? (it's quite a large place) or just in Shanghai? Ie have you been to 1% of the fish stores but it's ok, because you saw good ones.

And quite frankly if you are that easily offended because of a comparison, then maybe you should stop reading and replying to this thread.
sfsuphyiscs:
i was repsonding to patrickb 's comment on "6th Avenue operation is JUST like a Chinese fish store."

yes i never been to all fish places in china, so i never say all fishs stores in china are nice, but someone just be to HK and make the comment that 6th ave operate like chinese fish store? what does he know about chinese fish stores while he only been to a couple of places. it's just simple logics here.

being a chinese, i think this comment offended me.

I buy salt and some dry goods from 6th ave and fish from Lucky Ocean.

I agree - "What is the difference from mail ordering your fish to Sunday's Grabag don't they come in a plastic bag."

You guys are getting mad over silly things. I shop at 6th. What can you do when you need salt and its 9pm ? They happen to be open till 10pm and I live in the city. Can't say I buy live stock there anymore, I've never had a fish survive (except for 1 sailfin). And whats the fascination with 6th? It seems like the topic pops up every 4 months. I have to admit this is pretty good promotion from 6th.

Lets stay positive, focus on the stores we have. Aquatic Gallery, Aquascene, TP.
