Hi Kayla,
I haven't posted in this thread yet, until now, but have been following it - sorry but I did not read all of it. Great job on your tanks. Makes me want to set up a small tank just for the sea horse and put it my daughter's room. How big is your seahorse tank and the type of lights? how long have you had your mandarin and what's he eating? Do you have other fish in that tank besides the sea horse, and the mandarin? again - good job. Ohh, how often do you do water changes and what type of filtration are you using? Thankx. |

The mandarin has been in the tank for probably about a month now. He is eating frozen mysid shrimp (aka what the seahorses miss)--this is the ONLY reason I have a dragonet in such a small tank. Because I work at a LFS, I was able to discover this while feeding the fish. There is also an ample population of pods and live mysis, probably because he prefers dead food--it is much easier to catch. the reason many are unsuccessful with mandarins is that they do not last long enough living solely on the population of pods for them to finally acclimate to eating frozen foods, but if you can find one that is definitely doing so, the care for them is much like most other fish. I do weekly water changes of 5 gallons, thus yielding a 100% change monthly. Currently, the tank relies only on carbon and Purigen for filtration, as well as ~40 lbs of LR. I hope to add a sump where a (skimmer could run) in the future. HTH

Kayla, your pics get better with every series. your tank looks awesome.
one question though, does the purigen really work? i was in a PetCo down in FL last month a saw a package. since id never seen it before i picked it up and read it. it seemed almost too good to be true. does it really help out? would it on a larger system?

I do highly recommend Purigen (Seachem products are generally pretty reputable). I have found it to serve its purpose quite well. Should Purigen be used in place of a skimmer? IMHO, no, but it certainly does help to remove a fair bit of organics; this is apparent by a color change from white to brown in the "beads." I put mine in an area of higher flow, because it becomes much more efficient as the water is forced through the bag, rather than normally flowing around it (path of least resistance). Therefore, I wouldn't just float one in your sump; mine is blocking the output of my power filter, thus decreasing the flow for the SHs in addition to filtering a good amount of water. I hope this makes sense. It says to use one pack per 100 gallons, and I think it could only help your tank. However, if you are running a high-powered skimmer already, it should not make a significant difference. Quote:
Speaking of other fish...the Green Clown Goby finally ventured out from hiding long enough for me to take a pic

my skimmer is not high powered its actually a bit under rated. im on the search for a better one. this purigen may help me out a bit while i search for a good used skimmer that will fit my little sump. ive got a lead on a Deltec MC500, which should be plenty for my tank. ive just got to wait to get in touch with the guy again. hes in the military, so only has short intervals of communication, and im sure there are people hed rather talk to than me hopefully soon though. that and a closed loop will complete my system (except for corals, fish, and inverts of course ).
i love the green clown gobies i used to have one

Landon - A Deltec certainly isn't a bad option at all. I'm sorry about the loss of your Green Clown Goby. I thought mine would be shy, but he perches in the leather coral all day and is always out in plain view.
Kristopher - thanks! Just two more pics for you. I will try to get more later if there is interest: I hope everyone is having a great week so far. Kayla
