Planton...I think you got Favia Speciosa on the first one..Place it in low light area to see if it is colored up....For the LORD, it would take a little while to determine its true color...Of course, the color could have some variations depending on your reef environment....

damn this ****s addicting.. once I had the dremel out.. I made 2 more acan frags, a bunch of acro frags (OMG SOOO MUCH easier to cut acro w/dremels then screwing around with bone cutters). Sliced and diced a few of my nicer encrusting montiporas.. hmmm what next.. FISH!!! lol jk.

Thanks guys

I know this is an Acanth thread, but I wanted to show you guys this crazy coral I picked up yesterday.

I've identified it as Oculina robusta. It's an illegal coral to collect. It came from the Gulf of Mexico on a piece of Live Rock.

I saw a colony of it in this LFS's show tank, and I had to have it. But he wouldn't sell it. But low and behold, there was another smaller colony in his Live Rock bin on a piece of rock.

His was right under halides, and looked more colorful.
So wish me luck. Hopefully the dead spot doesn't spread.

RandyO, FWIW, I've been "growing" a piece of Oculina for over a year and I can tell you that it isnt very light loving. I keep mine under my efflo and it colors best there, with green polyps extended all the time. The coral only appears robust and fleshly when I feed Cyclopeee regularly which it realy loves. This coral is NOT a candidate for captive prop, in the time I have had it it has grown maybe 1/2 inch at the tips, although the branches are massive. But if you want this coral to be happy, put in in a dim spot and feed it alot.

Diito to what coralite said. IME, this coral doen't encrust too well to the rock either. Low light and slow grower.

Hey Guys,
Yes, that is what I read about this coral. 1" per year growth, lower light. But the one I saw had the green polyps, and it was directly under a MH. I will keep it low for now, and see what the color does. I know this coral will need regular feedings. Thanks for the tips.
