Well look at that - learn something everyday. Never heard of a MJ1000 - now I have.

I can't remember if that's the one that came out in the late 80's.

well I dont know what happened but I found that one of my mj1200s with the sureflow wasn't working today, when I was checking it out I found that the impeller drilled a hole through the maxijet on the back. is this because the stopper didn't work properly and the propeller was spinning backwards?

No spinning backwards wouldn't cause this, the stopper would not let it spin backwards, Do you have them on a wave maker? This can happen on to the MJ pumps if they are stopped and started many times. Lots of people will actually remove the back of the Mj and add some epoxy to the back of the MJ where the end of the impeller sits, to reinforce it.

I didnt remove anything, yes it is on wavemaker. Great so you cant use these on a wavemaker?

found this in another forum, its exactly what happened to me.
Is there an efficient way to prevent this? Last edited by ganjero; 11/12/2007 at 12:33 AM. |

None of the manufacturers of these kits will warranty these when used on a wavemaker, so there must be a reason. The 1200's are much more powerful and have more of a problem with this.
But, take the back cover off the MJ , and you can see where the impeller sits, cover it with some epoxy to reinforce it, then it should be fine. Not sure if you will be able to use the one that broke or not. |

so if I dont use the wavemaker this wont happen?

Nope.
You could also get a thin washer and glue it to the back cover where it meets the impeller housing and then glue the back cover on, this should be more than enough to eliminate this from happening. |

So many factors such as timer duration. How long did this unit last before it shot out the back?

it last about a month before the hole.

How old was the Maxijet? I've only seen this twice myself and both times due to the really old maxijet pumps.
I think this is an issue due to the age of the pump where the plastic end is worn out and made brittle. That or a build quality issue of the MJ pump itself. I don't see how the GSII mod or any mod could have caused that by themselves. I think if this was to happen it would happen with the stock MJ anyway sans mod. |

dhnguyen, Do you use yours on a wavemaker? Can I fix the one with the hole? or should I trash it? Thanks again |

No I don't currently but previously I did and never had this problem.
I think it's a build issue for your MJ pump. The plastic shouldn't be so weak or so thin that it breaks off that easily. |

Does anyone else think that these MJ pumps were not made to have the extra pressure induced by the proprellor, and this may be why the hole is being made in some of the older maxijets that may already have brittle plastic?

I think the constant bouncing produced by turning them on and off on a wavemaker will break the back at some point.
Do you guys think I could repaired mine? and how? or should I trash it? Last edited by ganjero; 11/13/2007 at 02:39 AM. |

Honestly I don't see how that can be. I have had tons of mods running on wave timers and have never seen this happening except for the 2 instances where the MJ pumps themselves were very old and brittle. Unless there is something here on your kit that I'm unaware of, any pics of your end caps and shaft?

You could fix it, the crucial issue will be getting the impeller centered (much like the DIY maxi mods). If you have the pieces it should be real easy to epoxy it back into place. Heck you could resin cast the entire back & put the cover back on = should never break.
