They add more flow to the tank. Here is a link to where you can purchase them. You can read up on how they work and what types of pumps you need to run them. http://www.kthsales.com/website/Misc...nthusiasts.htm The blue valve things on my outside Durso's are JG valves for RO/DI apps. |

looking good. couple of question though and I don't mean to be negative.
why did you add fish so early without letting the tank sit for awhile and you'll be adding more liverock with those fish in there? also, why didn't you use eurobracing instead of cross bracing?? those cross braces should have been set inside the pains and not ontop. it makes a big difference in shear force. should hold but keep an eye out. isn't it fun building your own tank were did you order your PPG glass from? |

No offense taken John. The LR I used first was fully cured very excellent quality. I never added the first fish till after around 1 week. With this amount of water volume 400g major flow in the tank very good skimmer. I was not concerned with a surge. Going to add euro between the cross braces really more of a splash guard. Never seen a tank built like that before? There are many ways to build a tank. Glass was ordered from B.C.
P.S Are you still selling the Hammerhead pump? |

I really like your plumbing, so much that I'm considering replacing parts of my plumbing (PVC) with ABS, but don't know where I can get this stuff. Any suggestions for online vendors? Also, are there adapters to go from ABS to PVC?
thanks & keep the updates coming! It's quite impressive! -Chris |

Another update got back in to town. I added the last of the LR to the tank. I picked up 3 250w CoralVue electronic ballast running 14K CV bulbs and Reef Optics pendents. Tomorrow I hope to mount them. I'm pleased with the rock formations it adds great depth to the tank from both sides.
Here is a few pics. |

He was in my other tank. He is very docile. I have snails he does not even touch them. My regal tang gives him a slap now and then LOL. He has been good for the 8 months or so that have had him. That rock is great to work with very easy to stack very jagged pieces. Coraline has started to form on the starboard already.
On a different note today I went and saw another customer that shops at my LFS tank. He has a big Sohal tang that has out grown his tank and it keeps on splashing water and breaking his MH lights. He wants a new bulb for the fish. I was shocked when I saw this thing it must be 13-14" very fat and the colors on it our out of this world! It is by far the biggest and nicest Sohal tang I have seen including in pictures. It eats out of his fingers he gets along fairly well with a large powder blue tang that was in his tank. I hope to pick it up maybe tomorrow if not when I'm back in town again in around 2 weeks time. I will post lots of pics of him. |

Question. Why did you put the rock work in before the substrate? Or is there sand in there already? The way it looks in the pictures is so even and thin.

I finished installing my CoralVue ballasts and pendents. I'm very happy with the color of these bulbs. Very bright crisp white with a little hint of blue. For the most part I will be running the MH for viewing only. Will be using my 4 VHO URI Atinics for dawn and dusk effect. Looks like I will have to wait till I get back into town again to pick up the big Sohal.
Here is a few more pictures of what the tank looks like with the new lighting. |

I see what you mean but, the shape of this rock makes it very easy to get creative I wanted to have lots of gaps or openings for the flow and the fish in the tank. |

Absolutely gorgeous tank! I love the Naso and the Clown.
I'm still trying to get used to the Starboard. lol I just think the tank would look so much better with a sand substrate. But, then again...I've never had a tank without sand. What exactly is Starboard, anyway, and what is the benefit of using it? |

Starboard is highdensity polyethylene HDPE - it is a kind of plastic used in boats and cutting boards. Starboard is just a brand name HDPE. One advantage of starboard is that it has been UV stabilized - otherwise it will react with UV and change colors - which is nice if you are running halides.
People are starting to use starboard as opposed to sand beds since in sand detritus will settle into the sand, break down, produce nitrates and phosphates - with starboard it is very easy to syphon the stuff off every few days and just get it out of the tank. Another advantage is that it allows you to run extreme flow through the tank without having to worry about stirring up sand storms(it is very popular with SPS keepers who try to turn over the water volume of a tank 30+ times per hour). So basically the advanatages of starboard - lower nitrates, easy maintenance, high flow without any adverse side effects(clouding, sand blowing around)
