Hopefully it was relatively painless. At least as much as can be expected anyway.

It wasn't too bad, but we still have a lot of bugs to work out.

(ducks for cover from the MH zealots)
The VP of my reef club has some really beautiful corals growing under NO lighting. I keep talking to the wife about upgrading from NO lighting to T-5 or VHO, but I have to agree with her logic behind not wanting to upgrade right now. We're eventually planning on a bigger tank like a 180 or 250. If I get lights for my 75, I won't be able to use them on the new tank. So I deal with NO lighting until I can go big and turn it into an SPS tank.

Some SPS do very well in low light. Pocillipora and Hyndophora for example.

Greg,

I may have missed it, how are you dealing with humidity due to water evaporation from your tank? Central-Air, HRV/AirExchanger, Dehumidifier?

Thanks...

I've got central air. I don't need a dehumidifier since I added the chiller and removed the box fan. Being in florida 3 or 4 gallons of evaporation from the tank isn't even detectable in the room.

Would you be willing to post some more pictures of the starboard on the bottom? I'm curious about how much coralline algae is growing on the bottom, and how it looks. Maybe some close ups if you get a chance.

Live Rock

Greg thank's for posting your 400 BB.
You are using many of the same concepts I have been thinking about for the 900 I am planning.
I have one question how did you prep your live rock?
Thank's for your time

There's not much there yet. I will take some pics for you as soon as I can. It's kinda busy around here right now. Sorry....

Hi Ken.

I put the rock in a large rubbermade trough for several months. Only got ambient light from being on my back porch. Had a couple maxijets for current....

Sweet looking tank Greg! I really like the clean starboard look.

Ever tried to silicone the starboard to glass? Is it possible?

I have a DIY chiller made from a window AC unit. I'll repost the link to more information...

You may need a chiller even in Maine if you are using MH's. It depends on a lot of factors.

silicone won't adhere to starboard.

I was looking at another thread about eductors. Have you had any problems with fish/critters getting sucked into the intake side of your eductors?

No, but I don't have many fish either. My clowns swim all around them and seem smart enough to stay out of the vortex...

Oh yeah, and I got some pictures of the coralline on the starboard last night, so I'll be posting them today.

No, I'm saving it from being eaten by homeless people.

It's also part of a scientific study in the effects of eductors on clownfish.

I'm proud to say those clowns have been with me for 7 years. Two clowns alone in a 300 gallon tank. You're going to have a hard time arguing husbandry and stocking levels with me on this tank.

You must really, really like those clowns to build such a nice home for them.

When are they going to get some neighbors and what kind fish are you thinking about adding?

I don't want to disrupt eljefe3's thread, so I'll pose this question on my thread instead....

Is keeping a shark that grow's to 6 foot in an 1800 gallon aquarium more ethical than killing it for it's fins?

The long answer....

I do believe it light stocking and proper consideration for the environmental needs of an animal. I'm also a carnivore.

I do not see these things as mutually exclusive. Killing an animal for food is still respectful to the animal in a "honorable" sense. It is not senseless slaughter. It is for nourishment.

However, keeping an animal alive, but in improper conditions so we can oogle at them for our pleasure is much less "honerable" than killing them.

That's my opinion.

I do plan on adding more fish, but most would still consider the tank understocked, I'm sure. They will be likely mostly carribean fish.

That's bordering on a political/religious debate. Don't what the power-happy mods to jump in and close your thread....
