Yep and when those offers come rolling in you had better be able to speak Japanese or be able to exchange a big wad of Yen.
But you just might see this fish available someday. With the sighting in shallow water off of southern Japan it means this fish is in more area's and much shallower when the currents and water temp are right. Carl |

Sighting in shallow water?? Say what? Maybe there is hope. Of course, I just looked at the Poll up at the top of this thread & noticed that Paracentropyge boylei is about the most owned rare angel on RC. Interesting, maybe a source will be found.
I'm also waiting for more deep reef collecting expeditions. Just gets my juices going thinking of what might come up! Matthew |

I think it was as shallow as 15 feet they observed the juvenile.

What's wrong with its colors Coralite? Plenty of Butterflyfish have similar colors..
But I guess its whatever turns you on. **** Actually, I'd love to have a crack at THAT butterfly they caught. Neat fish! Matthew |

Collectors wouldn't pay thousands of dollars for this fish because of the way it looks. They will pay to say they own one of the rarest Angelfish in world.

Only 15 feet? Was this in cold water? And is the person sure about the identity?
Well, maybe there is hope. Matthew |

Hey guys, finally like Zem and pactrop I could say I'm checking in from Hawaii...
![]() ![]() Anyway, the commercial breaks in the show were fantastic... getting the inside story from these guys. Rich only got one C. abei to the few that Brian Greene got, but Rich's is the only one left alive and it looks great at the Waikiki Aquarium... after being in bad shape it's really settled in well... here's a shot I took of it on Sunday... ![]() While this was an exciting find... the real highlight of the dive was the sapphire blue Chromis species collected on the dive... 100% unknown before that. The Prognathodes butterfly shown in the video Rich thinks is the same species he collected in Hawaii that is also on display at the Waikiki Aquarium... just a different color variant... a wide ranging species that would make it... That fish is also undescribed... Here's a shot of one of the two the aquarium has... ![]() C. abei has been recorded in both Palau and Indonesia at depth, but earlier this year a juvenile was photographed and documented in Southern Japan at a depth of 15 feet for about two months straight... amazing when you think about it... the surface temp was 62 degrees... Charles Delbeek has done a great job with the abei at the aquarium and has slowly brought it up in temp, but it is still at 73 degrees, so if someone wants to drop the money of this fish they'll also be paying a hefty electric bill to chill its system down... C. abei's beauty comes not in its color, but its uniqueness... I had dinner with Gerry Allen, who described the species, and he said it fell almost in the middle of Centropyge and Apolemicthys... by looking at it you could tell its quite unique... ![]() To close it off here's another shot from the aquarium... another "only one in the world on display" angelfish the Waikiki Aquarium has... ![]() ![]()

John,
Thanks for the pics! Any chance you can get a pic of the unknown electric blue damsel from those guys? Btw, the C. abei in your pic is far prettier than the previous pic of it.. Sincerely, Matthew |

John could you let us know when the program will air on the BBC?? I would love to see the full version. I've already watched the Discovery version at least half a dozen times. Gotta love DVR. I wish I was in in your shoes & being able to watch it with those guys.

Very nice!
All this talk about rare angels brings me to one question. Who are the rare collectors here in the U.S. - Who has the best or most rare collection??? |

I am sure there are some collectors out there that are not on this site and probably keep it on the down low but as far as RC members my vote goes for Copps. He has one of the most diverse collections that I know of. I mean how many people in the US can say they have Resplendant's.

Don't know that one, but I'm sure Jealous of Large Angels if that C. vanderloosi is still alive? How is that doing? I wasn't following the thread when you got that, but oh Man. What a find!
How is it doing, Large Angels? Matthew |

Hey copps,
Not to Hijack the thread, but did you see the Pacific Abyss re-run? What are your thoughts on that pair of Genicanthus bellus they caught outside the (previously) known range? Matthew |
