I like the idea of adjusting the height of the lights. Not worried about the MH's, but I would like to lower the actinics. So after seeing how you used chains/pvc, it got me thinking. I quickly put this drawing together. It uses nothing but pvc. I will drill some holes in the pvc and use a pin to place in the hole to keep the lights up when needed. Sorry for the very crude drawing.....

Which hose clamps are you talking about?

Thanks, do you have anything in your grow out tanks you havn't put in your tank yet? Pics of those? And I might have missed it but what do you use to heat the water of the tank, or is it hot because of the lighting, pumps... and you just have to chill it?

Stand Question

Greg,

I am about to build a stand for the 180 gallon tank I just bought and like the look of the frame on yours since its nice and simple, and allows for maximum use of space under the stand. I have a question about the verticle 2x4 supports. Do you know how they were fastened to the horizontal 2x4s on the top and bottom? Do you know if he used mortise and tennon joints? I do not see any screws from the pics.

Thanks!
Mike

Looks a lot like my initial plan. I opted for the chains just for simplicity sake.

Man, I'm having a heck of a time keeping up with you guys today. Very busy at work. I'll get to everyone eventually....

Everything is moved now. I have a little 30 gallon tank set up that has all the things I didn't want to put in the big tank.

I have a 100 watt heater in the sump, but in FL, it rarely will be needed.

Very cool. I'd go with a bigger AC unit and a lot more tubing in the bath for 628 gallons.

The only question I can answer is that you don't see screws because they are all counter-sunk. I'll try to get John to come on and answer the rest of your questions....

Thanks Greg!

If I can just use pocket screws or something to attach them that sure would save a lot of time and effort. I figure if it will hold your tank, it should hold my 180 without problems.

Thanks again.

To build the stand, I used 3" deck screws (Deck Mate) and pocketed each one. At every joint a liberal amount of marine duty Liquid Nails was applied for added strength.

Great thread Greg and it's nice to see the tank up and running. I'm slowly trying to get caught up now that I'm back on land.

You bet! John did a great job on the stand, I'm glad I didn't try to do that one on my own. I sleep much better at night.

Yeah, no kidding! I know where I can get a good used 24,000 BTU unit for about what you paid. I'll go from there.

I thought I'd start out this morning with a few random plumbing shots that I don't think I've posted yet...

Good Morning Steve,

There's a piece of hard PVC on either end. The hose clamps are over a piece of vinyl tubing and clamped down on either end. I highly recommend (and will eventually do it myself) replacing that with a union.

He's being serious, I've been out at sea for the past month.

Greg: If you get a chance, can you make a quicktime video for us Mac folk? If it's too much trouble, don't worry about it.

I'll try to remember to do it this evening. You might have to remind me.
