its not good for the fish because they see fish and freak out causing unneeded stress.

I saw a thread where a guy uses shotcrete and Crushed Oyster Shells and applies it to the back of the tank and overflow boxes. Makes it almost look like the water is going over the top of the rock.
Just applys it right to the back of the tank and then uses some hardware to make the shapes. (He also adds plastic nuts throughout for corals...Mounts the coral to a plastic bolt that screws into the nut...of course) Wish I would have seen that before I started my tank...I think I would have done some things different. |

kgouso that sounds pretty cool.
I myself went with the black pond foam and it looks pretty good, mostly covered in purple coraline.. at one point I had a cap encrust and grow out of it, that looked cool too. |

I too like black on reef, dark blue on freshwater. Also I like the foam backs better than the black for reefs.
I have added a piece of styrofoam to the back of my tank in order to help insulate the tank from heat loss/gain. (I have a piece under my tank too, although the weight of the tank is not resting on it.) Of course, you can not use a magnetic cleaner with the foam, but you can't easily use a mag cleaner on a black or blue back anyway. The foam is available from many lfs as shipping box liners and can only help insulate the tank. |
