I'm setting up a Maristar 250watt HQI w/ 14K Phoenix and 2x24watt T5 actinics over a 36" x 20" x 22" trimless/braceless so it'll be completely open top without a canopy =)

I'm hoping it will provide enough coverage as well. I'll have most of the rockwork in the middle of the tank, avoiding the sides so no corals will really exist over there anyway.

It's in the living room, near the TV, so I don't want light spilling all over the place.

Gogeous tank! I love it! Great lighting too! What bulb/ballast combination are you using? What are your tank dimensions?

My next tank will be lit very similarly, a Lumenarc III with a 400W bulb, but I'll be adding two 48" T5's for supplemental blue lighting. Outside tank dimensions will be 54" x 24" x 20" Tall, but the actual inside of the tank (as the last 6" are overflow space) will be 48" long.

No pics yet unfortunately... I'm ordering the tank this week!

hi funky fish14 , thanks.
the light combo is a coralvue electronic ballast with a reeflux 400w lamp. i tried the 12k but it was too blue for me. the tank is 4x2x2.
i also have an actinc t8 for before and after but im going to build a unit for some led spots which will aim up into the reflector, which will hopefully spread the light a bit.

My last tank was 24" long (and 28" high) and was lit by a single 250 watt DE metal halide. The corals had great color from the top, but very poor color from the bottom, and in some cases even died off from underneath because of a lack of light.

IMO more than 1 point of light is needed for SPS to really do well.

Awesome! Thanks for the info!

Great tanks to everyone else as well!

That is an aquarium to be proud of. How do you like the bulb you are running now compared to the megachrome? How has the growth been for you.

Thanks.
the tank wasn't looking good at the time of the Giesemann. Too many factors: magnetic ballast, softies mixed with stonies, and simple (rushed) tank move blues,...It has finally stabilized over the last couple of months. I've corrected most of those problems and the growth has been decent. A CR would def help.

I could not agree with you more about the calcium reactor. I have been using the Schuran Jetstream 1 for some time now and love it. If your limited on space its nice because of how its mounted on the plastic board you can fix it to a wall in your stand.

So you use no supplementation as far as lighting goes? Are you thinking of adding something later or just going to stick it out with halide only..

I can't fit anything under the stand anymore. So no CR...
No supp lighting since I have a Mini Lumenarc in the canopy. I knew the tank set up is not ideal, I just had to live with its shortcomings. Heck, it got up to 85 degrees quite regularly in the summer because my fans couldn't move enough air.
