My question is that i keep getting these brown dots that spread on the inside of my glass, and then these brown strings form and then detach from the glass into the water flow.

My water quality is good.
The pH is 8.2, Nitrite is 0, Nitrate is 2, Ammonia is 0.
Temperature ranges from 77.5 - 78.8

Here are some pics:





I am not sure if these pictures are clear enough, I took them from the side to get a picture looking inside at it. The 1st picture the brown dots forming towards the bottom of the glass. The 2nd picture is the hair like formations.

I have been cleaning this off the glass every day for the last 4 days.

Well, it could be a type of nuisance algae, a hydroid, or maybe a tiny feather duster. I'm thinking the first one, but I just can't make it out from your pictures.

If you can get a better picture that is larger (just the subject, not all of the stuff around it while not distorting the image), I'll try again or you can as this question in "Ask Dr Ron"'s forum.

RC (Reef Central) is the best place to go for help with your tank. Read, read, and read some more and then make your best choices before you spend the money. You can ask others for help before making a purchase to avoid wasting money on sub-par equipment or livestock that has little chance of survival in a tank. Just because the LFS (local fish store) sells it doesn't mean you'll be able to keep it alive.

First let me say... Wonderful! This has been ultimately helpful in my search for the species in my tank. Being new, and finding so many new little surprises in my tank, this site has helped me so much!

Can I submit a photo that I don't know whaton earth it is? I have a couple new things in my tank that I happened to get along with 'true purchase' (a live rock with sun polyps) and was wondering if someone could tell me what they are. I know one is some type of mushroom, I think Ricordia, but am not sure...

Well, here they are. I hope I did this right; I'm sorry they are a bit blurry, but I have not yet mastered the art of taking photos of inside my tank. I hope they are clear enough to at least be able to tell what they are.

Hmm. Neither one is very easy for me to ID. The first one... does it stay in that spot? Does it every look soft and somewhat puffy? It almost looks like a single polyp of acanthastrea. The second one might be an aiptasia, but it actually looks more like a tiny leather coral that is straining for light. Can you try taking a couple more pictures please?

Yes, I will try. Any tips on how to take clear photos? The first is some type of mushroom. Soft, has 'bubbly' looking top, like a ricordia... but if it is, I wonder what kind? The second, the 'stalk' is hard, but not like rock. It's definitely not aiptasia. It widens on top to a kind of flattened dome, which is what those finger looking things protrude from. if you touch it, they pull in, leaving that 'hard' stump. I'll try to take more clear photos

Also, RC has a Photography forum with tons of helpful tutorials that you could spend hours reading. My article is more like a 10 minutes read, and should get you on the right track.

If you think it is a mushroom, it could be a ricordia although the coloration looks more like a mini carpet anemone to me. The second one definitely sounds like a leather, like a Toadstool baby. Eventually as it grows, those prickly tips will sprout five petal flowers call polyps.

Well, prior to reading your reply, I did take a few more pics. Here are more of that little coral thingamabob without the tentacles out. It kind of sticks them out sometimes, then other times they're tucked away.

I took this one with my little clown in the pic to get an idea of how small that bitty thing is.

Here are a couple more pics of the (what I think is a) mushroom. Is this any better? I think my problem is inadequate lighting. I've ordered a compact flourescent light today, so I'm all excited!! I'll have better lighting!! Yay! So, uh, what do you think? (Disregard the algae growing all over my back glass )

Oh and P.S. the mushroom thing is soft, and it will close up if you touch it, like an anenome closes up. The coloration is darker reddish purple, light pinkish purple, with neon green patches that are fairly symmetrical 'striped' in there. Yes, it is stationary. It lays out like a mushroom does, that's why I keep thinking it is, but obviously I am noooo expert!

You know, that little mushroom thing may be a tiny rock anemone.

The other is definitely a Toadstool leather.
