Does anyone know if this was a lanceolatus or a roseafascia? (given that I can't see a pic of it)?

It's still the advertised fish picture on the main DD page, so you can see the picture there Fairy Wrassler.
Did anyone save the picture? I only had a chance to see the main page picture . I'm not surprised at all it went so fast. |

That main page picture is not a rosefascia, but nor is it like any lanceolatus picture I have seen. Which is not to say much, because few lanceolatus pictures exist. Does anyone know where they say it came from?

It is one of undescribed species of Cirrhilabrus. It is known from southern Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, and it almost enters the aquarium trade from Cebu. Not known from Indonesian waters but it may exist in northern part around Sangihe Islands or Manado, Sulawesi.
Males have a reddish line on side that curves just above pectoral-fin base; it is not seen in lanceolatus or roseafascia. The species gows to 12cm at maximum as far as I know. It loves deeper waters and usually commands a high price in market. It is very similar in appearance to lunatus from northwestern Pacific but the latter has a deeply lunate caudal fin; they mix well in nature and reproduce hybrid cross on rare occasion. The species will be named by a Japanese ichthyologist and his colleague, perhaps this year. The fish on page 40 (in Rudie Kuiter's wrasse book, 2002) illustrates roseafascia in Palau (bottom photo; I). He is now revising the book for the new edition. |

Thanks for clearing that up Tanaka. There is still a lot of confusion over the lanceolatus and rosefacia. Even a MAJOR LA wholesaler mislabels rosefacia as lanceolatus, even though the placement of the dot on the pelvic fin clearly shows it as a rosefacia.
I hope that Rudie Kuiter can get some pictures that shows the pelvic fins of the lancealoatus, as only one his pictures shows it and that is of a full male. |

I have been ordering a "longtail wrasse" from a major LA wholesaler just to find out what it is - they call it a lanceolatus and it is out of Cebu. No luck in getting one thus far....

If it is the same wholesaler mine came from then it is C. rosefacia and NOT lanceolatus.

as far as i can tell there have only been a few C. cf lancelatus imported into the states. the three to LA and at least one to los angeles wholesalers that made it into lfs

I suspected that they were roseafascia. I have been getting roseafascia from Vanuatu. I will always be looking for rare and beautiful fairies :-)

I think this may be it. LA called it a Super Rare Long-tailed Wrasse $499.99.

Tell me if I'm wrong but didn't the fish that was on there before this one go for under $300? Man inflation sucks...

i agree. the only wrasses id pay a premium for are the pin tail, rhomboid, linneatus, earl's and maybe the lunatus though i haven't seen too many photos. the roseafascia, flame, and a few others are beautiful but more common.
the marjories and girdled wrasses along with a few others just dont do it for me even though they demand that high price.

i think a supermale flame wrasse blows away any fairy wrasse you can buy. You just can't beat the metalic red over the yellow...
aren't lanceolatus and roseafascia very aggressive?
