Yep - as above, brush on the resin and then sprinkle on sand/gravel...the resin is sticky enough to work with like that for about 4-5 mins so i just did a bit of resin....bit of sprinkle It was the most fun part of the build!
Give it 2 hrs to dry hard then hose it down to remove the excess (there's LOADS...i did the sprinkling in a large tub so i could catch the excess i applied) After the hose down...leave one day to dry then touch up with more sand in any spots missed on the first run. Wait 2hrs......done - stick in the tank (or do like me and wait for months because you are too busy to fill the thing!) |

FWIW - i ended up using the crack filler Great STuff and poured sand on it once it was applied. No need for epxy as I got a pretty good coating of sand on it. Plus, the crack filler is a more neutral color like the live rock co pared to the more yellow color of the other Great Stuff. At least it was in the cans I bought.

I just got some of that "Great Stuff" filler. I hope it works IPT.
Will the foam and the epoxy be toxic at all?? Or even leach into the water later on? |

It also provides the benefit of "plugging coral frags" very easy since the foam punctures easily and provides a lot of grip for the plug. All this without the pre-planned plug holes sometimes used in DIY ROCK. The foam does not hold the rock together, rather the rock makes the very buoyant foam sink and stay put. It is the perfect partnership. The live rock providing the usually health benefits and the foam the aesthetic benefit. So basically this method provides another (I think very good) alternative to aquacaping enthusiasts than the usual: + Basic Pile of rocks. + Pin rocks together with acrylic rods (I did it this way). + Zip tie rocks to PVC. + Make their own rocks using aragocrete. + And lastly use a lot of the foam mentioned here by itself.

Keelay - all spot on. Should add....i cant see the cable ties ever failing (not in the life of my tank anyway!) and although the foam doest hold the rock ...in a way it does, once it expands to the shape of the rock it gives the whole structure great strength.....you cant wobble any of the rocks - if there was a way of getting the foam onto the frame without cable tie the rock that would also work - but far easier to tie the rocks in place to create your basic shape, then foam afterwards.
