Exclamation OH MY GOD!!! Grip of DEATH!!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had my blue hippo tang since it was 1/2 inch and for over 2yrs. It is now almost 6 inches.

Today the tang decided to nip on my clam..

AND OH MY GOD THE CLAM GRIPPED THE HELL OUT OF MY TANG!!

I tried to use my TWO hands to OPEN this clam, but God help me... I could not do it at all!! CLAMS HAVE SUCH A STRONG GRIP!!

Im AMAZED at the clams defensive instinct, and at the same time, devasted by the soon to be loss of my tang!

I took the clam out with my tang attached to it in a large bowl..

Then I used a flat tool to pry the clam open just a tad bit to release my tang...

the tang came out, but had its face looking totally flat.. posssibly all bones broken.. it went behind some rock and will die most likley...

I HAD MY TANG FOR 2 YRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I know its nature, but DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!! DEVASTATING!

There was a pic just like that posted awhile back. I think it was an Emperor Angel. It met the same fate.

next time.....

this happened with my clown and maxima, here's the trick, i picked up the clam and pressured the base of it's foot, couple of pumps and the clam opened just enough for the clown to swim out. the blue? probably done but try a qt or isolate a quiet place in the tank and see how he does, tangs have a ton of issues but are pretty hardy, may have aesthetic scars but 2 years makes him a keeper.

good luck man

Clams unfortunately are like bear-traps---there's no thought involved, just a lightning-fast reflex when tripped, like when the doc whacks your knee. So sorry. I've had a crocea for a year, no problems, including a purple tang. Here's hoping your guy survives.

yea im so shocked.. its not the clams fault, just its defense.. so i cant rid of it.. but if you saw it, i lifted my clam up.. the tang was just attached to it! the clam would just not let go! it was exactly like a bear trap! i will keep you guys posted on my tangs health.. right now, she is in a corner behind a rock, still alive.. lets all pray.

I think your tang will make it as long as its gills still function properly and its jaw isn't broken too bad to prevent feeding. Do you have any other fish in there that will harass him now that he is injured?

There was another one that was posted a week or two ago with a clam and a Naso Tang. The guy that owned them was able to get the clam open and I think the Naso survived.

You would think that just through natural selection in the wild, fish would avoid doing that. Maybe they haven't coexisted with clams for enough time yet. I once had a GSM that hosted in a gigas.
Nothing like that ever happened though. The clam didn't mind for some reason.
