The largest captive grown STAG i've seen (pic)

I was browsing through Dustin's personal website when I came across Saxby's tank. This has got to be the largest captive stag we've all seen. if anyone has anything bigger, please post! Dustin, thanks for not sharing all of these beautiful pics you have in your gallery. haha! Just kidding

Edward, I believe David lose this stag to a cracked bulb, emitting UV & basically nuking most of his reef I had the very same thing happen to one of my 1000Wer's after upgrading my main tank pump. I lost over 40 SPS & LR due to UV burn. The smell was absolutely overwhelming Bob

Bob, sorry to hear that. Did water get on your bulb somehow? or was it a damaged bulb?

You have to love some fish. I had a batfish in my reef tank that got angry one day because I did not feed enough. He got to the sirface and splashed some water onto a bulb and it cracked it. I did not notice it until the next day when I saw 2 large colonies (about 2/3 of the size of the one in the picture) just turn into mucous and peeling tissue. 3 more in the vecinity started to go, but I was able to salvage some larger pieces. I opened the canopy and the bulb had cracked circunferentially in the middle and the end sleeve was hanging there by a thread with a 2"+ gap burning the corals.

Awesome tank by the way.

That is a very impressive stag but a guy in my area has one that can beat that size. The only diff is his stag formation is not as dense as this one. The over size is almost 2 feet wide.

Those are the kind of colonies that make you not want to make any frags from your tank.

Edward, I didn't realize but too late the increased flow had on spash-up Only 3hrs. later but everything on that 1/3 of my reef was totally, completely white[I was in my ofc. at the time] It looked like an atomic bomb exploded over that section.....Alberto, I have had that happen with a 400w before with only tip damage. It took months for them to recover. Bob

John:

I don't think you are loosing some depth perception here. That colony has to be about 3 feet wide at least based on the size of other things around and the size of the tank. It is not right up against the glass either.

Everytime I get frustrated with my tank/this hobby, I see a work of art and science like this man's tank and I take heart at what is possible. Sorry to hear of your lose but that has to be one of THE most impressive tanks out there.

May be I am...What do I know? We have seen enough corals and tanks over the years so one look we can pretty much tell how big the colony is.

If that colony is 3 feet wide like you say then the tank has to be at least 12 feet long (judging from the second pic in the thread ) If that is true then I WAS WRONG.

The question is: what's the dimension of the tank?

My guess is the tank is 8' and I bet those doors up top are 2' each. If this is true then that stag is a little under 2' wide. Good guess John.

From ultimate marine aquariums book by Mike Paletta -- David Saxby's tank configuration is Sort of L-shaped with the sides being 3 meters, 1.5 meters, and 2 meters respectively and a height of 1.2 meters. The display is 1,500 gallons with a sump holding an additional 1,500 gallons.

Cnecktie, just to give you some background info, David Saxby is an avid English aquarist, who also is the majority owner of Deltec. Bob

John:

No need to get arrogant OHHHH coral master. Just a difference of opinion man. 2 or 3 feet, like it really matters that much.

Invincible569:

The day aged salt put up pictures of his tank, I will go drinking. I have been after him over a year. He even has a digital camera, but I doubt he has taken it out of the box since dec when he got it

You'd be surprised of the amazing tanks that do not make it to RC. Greg Schimer's tank, Julian Sprung, and a few hundred other amazing tanks are just a few.
