Look at this hog I caught in my 210!

This guy had grown from a tiny hitchhiker, to this enormous monster that was snapping the tips off my acros, and eating my clams up like popcorn!

I had tried multiple traps, starting with the glass jar, then the 2 liter plastic bottle, then ended up using an acrylic fish trap with a sliding door on the end. After 20 or 30 nights trying, using bait that included scallops, shrimp, silversides, and even CHICKEN, what finally got him was DERESA CLAM! I came home from work and saw he had just killed one of my pretty Derasa clams and was making a meal of it, when the wife suggested since he's already got a taste for it, use it as bait.

So, in the trap went the remains of the clam, and after about an hour, and 7 false attempts to enter the trap, in he went! He's now residing in my sump, as I decide what to do with him. This sucker's big enough to cook!

It's a Xanthid crab. Dr. Ron ID'd it for me in this thread:

http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=369766

I had seen it a few months back when it was much smaller. Then I noticed that I was losing clams. Then, that the tips of the acro colonies were being bitten off. Initially, I thought the flam, coral beauty, bicolor, or even the Emperor angel had gone coral eating. But then I saw where the acros were snipped clean through the hard skeleton on the tips, some at pretty thick diameters. No way a small fish did that (the Emperor is only 4 inches long)

Then one night, just playing around with a flashlight, I see this crab again, two times the size he was. Initially, I didn't suspect him, but Dr. Ron convinced me otherwise. Oh, and when I saw him snip an acro tip also helped convince me!

Cook that monster! Season it with some lemon and butter :-)

That crab must have cost you a pretty penny killing your derasa and other creatures in your tank. Get back your money by eating it

To heck with trapping, I would have ka-bobbed the sucker and feed it to my fish.

Nah, no blender or cooking yet. I tossed him in my sump, and he's running around in there until I can take him to the LFS for a show and tell session

Sell him on Ebay. Advertise him as a tank cleaner, because he cleaned you out!

Sorry to hear about the clam, they are hard to loose.

And you'd think he'd be a mean sucka after eating my corals and clams; but when I pick him up, he just sits there. Apparently, he's all bark and no bite.

He's still in the sump, and the wife is now worried that he won't get enough to eat. I think I'll have to tell her how much all those clams and corals cost, then her sympathy will evaporate.

Next to a Mantis shrimp, that thing is the ultimate sump monster. I would love to have it.

Nuisance Crab Cakes

• 1 nuisance crab, cartilage removed
• 1 egg, slightly beaten
• 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs
• 2 green onions, finely chopped (2 tablespoons)
• 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or salad dressing
• 1 tablespoon snipped parsley
• 2 teaspoons snipped fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
• 2 teaspoons Dijon-style or Creole mustard
• 1/2 teaspoon white wine Worcestershire sauce
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup cornmeal
• 2 tablespoons cooking oil
• Salad greens (optional)
• Lemon wedges (optional)
• 1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
• 1/4 cup finely chopped dill pickle or sweet pickle relish
• 1 tablespoon sliced green onion
• 1 tablespoon snipped fresh parsley
• 1 tablespoon diced pimiento
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Kill crab, set aside.
In a medium bowl combine egg, 1/4 cup of the fine dry bread crumbs, the finely chopped green onions, the 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or salad dressing, 1 tablespoon parsley, thyme, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Add crab; mix well. Shape crab mixture into four 3/4 -inch-thick patties.
In a small bowl combine remaining fine dry bread crumbs and cornmeal. Coat patties with cornmeal mixture.
In a large skillet heat the cooking oil; add crab cakes. Cook over medium heat about 3 minutes on each side or until crab cakes are golden and heated through, adding additional oil, if necessary..
For tartar sauce, in a small bowl stir together the 1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing, chopped dill pickle or sweet pickle relish, 1 tablespoon sliced green onion, 1 tablespoon parsley, the pimiento, and lemon juice. Serve crab cakes on a bed of salad greens and top with tartar sauce, if desired. Garnish with lemon wedges, if desired.

Maury,

That's one big crab!

You'll have to show me your tank some day. I just realized who you are and we live only a few houses apart.

Well, I may find out, as he's still in the sump. I think I'll keep him around as a parenting tool, as I have 5 boys. I can threaten them that if the do something bad, I'll toss the crab in the bed with 'em while they're sleeping!

And Ninong, I PM’ed you.
