Natural Filtration for Nano?

I am considering starting a 15 or 30 gallon nano. I recently read this article about natural filtration.

Are there any opinions on this? Should I skip the skimmer and hang on filter?

Do a little reading through this forum, almost all the picos are done this way and at least half the nanos.
