Ms. Wages or Ball are the two brands I have heard of that are acceptable for aquarium use. I use Ball.

I just got an order from Mrs. Wages. Ball no longer produces a plain pickling lime.

Really? When did this happen? Does this mean I will no longer be able to buy it, or that the Ball pickling lime at the store is not the right stuff?

I was trying to find pickling lime locally (with no success), so I got online to see if I could mail order from Ball. After doing some searching, I found that Ball (and Kerr) are owned by Alltrista, and that they do not have Pickling Lime listed as one of their products on their website (www.homecanning.com). I then called Ball/Kerr to see if I could order it, their customer service person told me that they were no longer making it (but I might still be able to find it in some stores, "while supplies last").

Thank you for your help. I am glad my local grocery store carries both brands.

No problem. BTW, if you ever do have trouble finding pickling lime, the Mrs. Wages I purchased online was a pretty good deal. I bought 4 16oz containers (they do no use the bags anymore) for less than $12 (with shipping).

I use food lion brand. $ 1.69 for over a pound. I use a sifter to filter out the large chunks. I've been using this brand for over eight months.

I did not think to try Food Lion. I'll have to stop by there and check them out. I am good for a while on pickling lime, but it would be nice to find that I had a local source. $1.69 a pound is a good price, and it is WAY cheaper than Kent from the LFS (which runs about $1 an ounce).

(why does this post strike me as sounding like a drug deal? )

And don't forget your dosing pump, MH lighting, CO2 generator, all those little test tubes, etc. etc.

If you mean teaspoons not tablespoons, then yes 1 to 2 teaspoons of kalk per gallon is usually a good starting point.
